Taiwanese electronics giant Hon Hai (which trades under the name Foxconn) will launch its 60-inch LCD television in Taiwan as part of efforts to promote high-definition digital content in the country, the company's chairman Terry Gou said Wednesday.

Hon Hai will hold press conferences Nov. 8 with Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan's largest telecom operator, and cable TV operator Kbro to introduce its 60-inch LCD TV, Gou said. "We will not be selling a television — we will be selling a carrier," he said at a local business forum.

The company aims to help distribute to the public the digital content produced by its partners, via a high-definition screen, Gou noted.

Hon Hai is the assembler of the Vizio brand 60-inch LCD TV, which is equipped with a flat panel manufactured by Sakai Display Product — a Japan-based joint venture between Hon Hai and the Japanese electronics maker Sharp, according to local media reports.

Chunghwa Telecom said it will launch a new promotional campaign for its multimedia-on-demand service, in cooperation with several partners, at press conference Thursday, but it declined to name the partners.

The number of subscribers to the MOD service, which was launched in 2005, exceeded 1 million last year, with revenue averaging NT$157 (US$5.40) per user, according to Chunghwa Telecom.

Boasting high-definition sports broadcasting and films, the MOD service had 1.16 million subscribers as of August and the number is expected to rise to 1.3 million by the end of this year, the operator said.
