Posted: 07 January 2012 1746 hrs
SINGAPORE: Police arrested four loanshark runners in Ang Mo Kio and Yishun on January 6.
The suspects, all men, are aged between 22 and 47 years old.
The 47-year-old suspect was arrested in the Ang Mo Kio Hub vicinity.
Police found several ATM cards, cash and one mobile phone believed to contain debtors' records on him.
Preliminary investigations show that the suspect had assisted loansharks by collecting debtors' ATM cards and checking on borrowers' HDB units to confirm that harassment has been carried out.
Also nabbed in Ang Mo Kio are two suspects aged 22 who were found loitering suspiciously outside a bank.
They had on them several ATM cards, bank transaction slips and handphones believed to contain debtors' records.
Police said the suspects had been helping loansharks by carrying out bank transfers and collecting ATM cards from bank account holders.
The fourth suspect, a debtor-turned-runner, was arrested in Yishun Ring Road.
Police seized a handphone which they believe contained debtors' records.
Anyone found guilty of assisting loansharks in unlicensed moneylending could be fined between S$30,000 and S$300,000, jailed for a maximum of four years and given six strokes of the cane.
