Tan Eng Yoon was the national track & field coach from 1958 to 1970. He showed a keen eye for talent. Over the years he has coached a generation of outstanding athletes. Among his protégés were Glory Barnabas, Nirza Namazie, Osman Merican and most notably, C Kunalan whom he talent scouted in 1962 after watching the latter played football at the Teachers' Training College, the predecessor of the National Institute of Education.

Kunalan became one of the best known track and field icons in Singapore. He won several Asian and SEAP Games medals and broke the 100m sprint record at the 1968 Mexico Olympics... this record remained unbroken for 23 years. He was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame in 2002 and attributed his success to his coach, Tan Eng Yoon.

Besides being a talented coach, Eng Yoon was also an outstanding sprinter of his times, competing at all major games such as the Olympiad, the Asiad and winning the first gold medal at the first SEAP Games in 1959. His triple jump record of 14.51 metres stood for an amazing 32 years.

Eng Yoon's heart is always close to sports - he was a director of the National Stadium Corporation which oversaw the construction of the National Stadium and was Deputy Executive Director of the Singapore Sports Council until his retirement in 1988. After his retirement he continued to be involved in sports serving as the General Secretary of the Football Association of Singapore from 1993 to 1999.

At his 80th birthday in Jan 2008, his athletes paid glowing tributes to him. Tan has been persuaded to write a book about the athletes he had groomed and nurtured and at the time of writing, he is compiling and collating information for this book.

There are many old regular church goers who will fauthfully attend mass, especially the morning service there. That stretch of road at Upper Thomson Rd, is getting to be dangerous for them, some crossing have to be erected soon, recently an old lady was killed near to the church, going for early mass.

How many more, does LTA need to see?, before something is done?:p

He is a GOOD man. Let him RIP.

Stop using his death as a CHEAP shot to garner votes for your young SCUMBAG CB Kia's camp candidate.

I liken this to JBJ condolence letter incident.

You are a SCUMBAG as well.

Let him RIP.

MP Hri Kumar: LTA says area not accident prone zone

Did anyone read the last few sentences in today Sunday Time's report on the Thomson Rd area where Tan Eng Yoon was killed ?

Bishan-Toa Payoh MP Hri Kumar quoted as saying (words to the effect):-

Have asked LTA before to implement pedestrian crossing.
Was told by LTA area not an accident prone zone.

Agreeing, Kumar said: LTA must be right otherwise we would have heard of more accidents in this area.

Sheeeesh.... talk about careless, unfeeling, naive, bo-chap stupid logic... How many more to die before you MP use your brian :oIo: ?

Fuck you also lah ahleebaba,

those are factual quotes from the late Tan Eng Yoon.

Shame on yr hero Rolling Cock for messing up his beloved athletics, for isn't your 'GOOD' man Tan Eng Yoon part of the SSC elite all these years.

Even Loh use this ocassion in Sunday Times to shamelessly say Tan is very knoeledgeable about athletics, as obvious as Loh knows nuts about motivation & athletes' psyche :oIo:

I don't blame them, these stay-in-ivory-tower MPs are so elite that they get driven to the other side of the road without the need to walk across.

Therefore how would they understand.

Further, by disagreeing with LTA's stand, he need to justify and fight to change it. If he agree, as it is, he just sit back and relax and continue to count his salary.

BTW, I never know there is such a name as a MP. Never heard of him until now when the next election is round the corner. What is his acheivement since elected 4 years ago ? Or where is his hiding place so secured we never find him until now.

Don't you know we've got many world class hidden talents.

Best place to see them is when they are sleeping in parliament, away from the publics eye

This is one road, LTA should install a speed camera. why nothing mentioned about the driver.

It is my stand that LTA is much to blame (other than the 33yr old driver who knock Tan down) for neglecting to take this Thomson stretch seriously.

Tan Eng Yoon is a much admired member of the establishment & the public.

I can bet in no time, a traffic light pedestrain crossing will be installed for all the senior citizens from the nearby estates (including Teacher Estate).

Sad that it has taken Tan Eng Yoon's life to accomplish such a small traffic installation from LTA considering all the digging & construction going on everywhere.
