A former coach of Woodlands Wellington football club was jailed for a year by a district court on Friday for misappropriating nearly $167,400 from his father-in-law.

R. Balasubramaniam, 39, transferred $131,500 from a joint bank account belonging to his wife Nirmala Jaybalen and his father-in-law Jaybalen Karsenathan. He also committed criminal breach of trust by pocketing another $35,900, which was the rental income of his father-in-law's house. These offences were committed between 2007 and 2011 when Mr Jaybalen, 65, a planning coordinator in ST Aerospace, was in France.

When Balasubramaniam pleaded guilty on March 19, Assistant Public Prosecutor Chew Xin Ying said that Madam Nirmala, a teacher, had told her husband the personal identification number of her ATM card so as to pay bills using money from the joint account she shared with her mother.

The ATM card was also able to access another joint account between Madam Nirmala and her father. In four years, Balasubramaniam made 67 fund transfers of sums ranging from $200 and $6,000.
