TOC Breaking News: Tan Jee Say and Ang Yong Guan join SDP

TOC has confirmed through reliable sources that two heavyweight candidates have joined the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP). Mr Tan Jee Say, former Principle Private Secretary to Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong and prominent grassroots leader Dr Ang Yong Guan have thrown their lot in with the party.

jeeang320240.png

Mr Tan Jee Say’s pedigree is impressive: he is a graduate of Oxford University having read Politics, Philosophy and Economics at the University, headed the economic and manpower planning unit in the Ministry of Trade and Industry from 1979 to 1985, and also worked closely with the late Dr Albert Winsemius, an illustrious foreign economic adviser to the Singapore Government.

Mr Tan is a Chartered Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities & Investment and between 1985 – 1990 served as the Principle Private Secretary to the then Deputy Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong.

Mr Tan first caught the attention of the public when he presented a 45 page paper on Singapore’s economic growth at a TOC forum earlier this year on the Singapore Budget. Mr Tan’s publication was praised by the former Head of the UK Civil Service Lord Butler as “a thorough and well-argued piece of work that deserves the attention of policy makers”. (See TOC report here.)

In it, Mr Tan argued that the Government’s focus on productivity failed to address the root problem of an influx of poorly skilled foreign labour:
“To focus on raising productivity as a key economic strategy, an old and discredited strategy adopted by the government since the early 1980′s, is like putting the cart before the horse – can we expect it to succeed when it has failed to do so in the last 30 years with productivity continuing to be stuck in the lows to this very day in spite of all the high-sounding campaigns by high-level productivity councils?

Rather we should focus our minds on economic policy because it is bad economic policy that has resulted in Singapore’s heavy dependence on foreign unskilled and low-skilled workers that in turn pulls down labour productivity.”
The SDP’s next catch is veteran grassroots leader, psychiatrist, and military man Dr Ang Yong Guan. Dr Ang served as a psychiatrist with the Singapore Armed Forces for 17 years from 1986 to 2003 and retired from the SAF as a Colonel, holding the appointment as the head of Psychological Medicine Branch (currently known as Psychological Care Centre) at the Military Medicine Institute, HQMC.

Apart from his impressive credentials in the military, Dr Ang was the president of Singapore Psychiatric Association (1997-1998), chairman of the Chapter of Psychiatrists, Academy of Medicine (2001- 2003), founder/chairman of Action Group for Mental Illness (since 2004), member of National Council on Problem Gambling (since 2005), and member of Clinical Advisory Committee for Chronic Disease Management Programme (since 2009).

Dr Ang was awarded the Public Service Medal in 1995 for community work, and the Public Administration Medal in 1996 for military services.

He is currently in private practice at Paragon Medical. He is also a Visiting Consultant to the Institute of Mental Health and Woodbridge Hospital.

Dr Ang Yong-Guan graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1979 with a medical degree and did his post-graduate training in psychiatry at the University of Edinburgh from 1984 to 1986.gl

I've attended quite a few courses conducted in part by Dr Ang when I was in the army. Good, intelligent chap who could connect with people. Welcome to the fold.

Interesting candidates.
Even more interesting is the fact that they chose to join SDP.

When VW joined SDP, quite hard to believe. Now, these 2 high fliers join SDP. Maybe SDP got barang? With CSJ helming the party, why would inteliigent chaps join SDP? Surely there exists other opposition parties in S'pore.

VW explained clearly. He didn't want to join any party that's neutral or passive on Sec 377a. As for the others, yes, quite some surprises. TJS I also heard he went to WP first, but couldn't accept some WP rules, so switched over to SDP.

Perhaps some candidates believe that SDP is the opposition party which is willing to really take on the pap.
It could also be that they have empathy for CSJ and his people, and feel that they have been victimized.

Could it be the rule that members have to be in the party for a certain period of time before being election candidates?

Whatever the motivations of these 2 guys in joining SDP, the key thing is that this represents a very big slap on the face for the PAP and for Wooden Goh personally.

PAP's standards must have really gone up since the last 2 elections because they did not invite the principal secretary for the subsequent election. The evidence - potential candidates must achieve the maturity of Rin Tin Tin and the lun-cheowness of the Chief of Ah Beng Army Society.

Seriously, there is nothing wrong with SDP (What went wrong a decade ago has passed).

These two heavyweight candidates and VW confirms that there is potential in the SDP, enough for them to join the SDP over WP, NSP, SPP etc

So perhaps CSJ is not the lunatic he has been made out to be.

bro, i do not know why you are so anti Mr CSJ. and i can tell you that he is not a bad crook like the Pappies. he is a head prefect in ACS and yesterday i happened to met his ex school mate from ACS and what he told me about Mr CSJ personalities are totally different from what the media had painted him to be. so i hope you study him in depth before making judgements to him.

as for Gomez he made 1 serious mistake during 2006. but human do make errors look at the PAPpies they make mistakes for 51 years yet people still being blinded by PAppies right??? why keep emphasizing gomez is bad when he made 1 serious mistake at least he is trying to make some ammendment for this GE. unless you tell me that is 1 mistake you cant forgive him then you judge between PAPpies and gomez who did more serious mistakes? at least gomez own up his mistake but PAPpies always shift the responsibilities to other people andsaid that they are not at fault. Mas salamat is 1 good example.

cheers

Actually, I have met him on many occasions, and have even done some work for him and Siok Chin. I can say categorically, he is NOT a lunatic, and never was. He has made mistakes which the PAPzis have then amplified into national issues.

So perhaps CSJ is not the lunatic he has been made out to be.

hahaha....some pple says our mighty csj needs to be sayang......
however kukubird cannot but still digs him......
of course he is shrewd and smart......otherwise he would not have remained SDP leader so many years.
this is also most intriguing.... how can party leader not able to take the lead or show face during GE campaigning?
it is like we always mock a General who cannot lead his troops in real battles.
