Ex table tennis president charged with corruption - Channel NewsAsia
http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/singaporelocalnews/view/1170100/1/.html

SINGAPORE: The ex-president of the Singapore Table Tennis Association (STTA) and former MP Choo Wee Khiang has been charged in court with corruption.

The Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau (CPIB) said from 2005 to 2007, it received several anonymous complaints against Choo, alleging that he had charged his personal airfares, expenses, phone bills to the Association and received gifts from Chinese coaches and players.

Choo was the STTA at the time of the alleged offences.

Acting on the information received, the Bureau conducted an investigation which revealed that in 2005, Choo had received S$1,500 from Liu Zhongze, who was then a national team player, and Luo Jie, who was then an assistant coach of the STTA, in return for giving Liu more opportunities to represent the Association in table tennis tournaments.

Investigation also revealed that between 2003 and 2004, Choo had received a total of US$600 on two separate occasions from Shi Mei Sheng, who was then a STTA coach, as a reward to Choo for approving the use of two different training facilities in China.

Besides Choo, the former High Performance Manager of STTA Koh Li Ping was also charged on Thursday morning.

The Bureau said between 2002 and 2003, Luo Jie, whose work pass only permitted him to work for STTA, provided table tennis training to students for a local secondary school.

But the school was unable to pay him for the training provided, which amounted to S$8,400.

Luo Jie told Choo and Koh about this.

They then allegedly arranged with the principal of the school to engage STTA in a new training arrangement with the intention to use the proceeds received to pay Luo Jie for the outstanding fees.

Subsequently, after STTA received the payment from the school, Koh obtained approval from Choo to authorise a payment of S$8,400 to Luo Jie, even though the latter did not provide any training services under the new training arrangement.

Choo Wee Khiang was charged with three counts of corruptly accepting gratification under Section 6(a) of the Prevention of Corruption Act, Chapter 241) and one count of criminal breach of trust as a servant, which is an offence under Section 408 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224.

Koh Li Ping was charged with one count of engaging with Choo Wee Khiang in a conspiracy to commit criminal breach of trust as a servant, an offence under Section 408 read with Section 109 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224.

These bunch of crooks should be locked up for a long time. Cunning dogs. Left hand pass to right hand.

He was MP more than ten years or ago, charged with corruption, sacked and jailed. Then given the yellow ribbon post of Table Tennis chief. Now, this again?

Apparently, Choo Wee Khiang's nephew is in PAP now....

Hougang man has a heart for the needy
Teochew-speaking NTUC deputy director believes no one should be left behind

MID-WAY through the press conference, Mr Desmond Choo rattled off a line in Teochew.

His switch from English to the Chinese dialect most frequently spoken in the opposition ward of Hougang was perhaps designed to show he would not shy from a contest against incumbent Workers' Party MP Low Thia Khiang.

Mr Choo, 33, the deputy director of NTUC's youth development unit, was appointed second adviser to the grassroots organisations in the opposition stronghold in February.

He is the latest People's Action Party (PAP) new face to be sent to Hougang to be what some might describe as a sacrificial lamb to the slaughter.

To this, Mr Choo said on Monday: 'No matter which candidates have been fielded there, we have always gone the full extent of what we could do.'

He seems cut from the same cloth as his predecessor Heng Chee How, who was also fielded as a new face in Hougang in 1997 and lost to Mr Low.

hi there

1. hahaha!
2. who is the old fart that boast " elite sheep well-fed is corruption-free"?
3. btw, who is the whistle-blower?

Desmond Choo had the lowest PAP score in GE 2011, and he wasn't even up against LTK, only up against YSL. Had LTK remained in Hougang, high possibility that Choo would have lost deposit and have his name immortalized in the PAP Hall of Shame.

STTA have no progress for the last 20 yr under Choo until MP LBW took over as president. Under Ms LBW we won a silver medal in the Olympic.
3 cheers for MP LBW

I hope this corrupted PAP scum gets sodomized inside Changi Holiday Inn..

I sure hope Gerald Ee and his salary review commission take this into consideration in case they decide to lower ministerial pay. We certainly cannot allow more corruption to happen!

this news report very good. it proves that whatever paps claimed that higher pays to minitoots and ministars would prevent corruption is entirely WRONG.

there is a warped definition in CORRUPTION.

how intensive or extensive is CORRUPTION considered a serious offence that need apply the law and public scrutinization?

to the us certain actions involving monetary rewards to certain officals are deem corrupted. but to the authority involved, it could be just a "gesture or a token" of appreciation or reciprocration.

is desmond as arrogant as his uncle cwk? cwk once hurt someone in a game of golf. i believe he got banned fr that golf club after the matter was publicised in the paper. he was probably a "slipped through" from pap's stringent candidates selection. the other embarrassment was discovered b4 he could be made an mp was steven tan which was hardly heard of now.

strangely, there wasn't any apologies and further verification of how such characters could have gotten into paps' ivory tower roundtable of the obsencely paid millionaires.

Isn't Choo Wee Khiang not related to ex-COS WInston Choo Wee Leong? If so, sama sama, lah.

PAP where got stringent selection? Tin Tin also can LOL

Look at the heading of the news in the ST front page.
They should have headlined it as "Ex-PAP MP Charged In Court For Corruption"
If it was others, the heading would surely have been different.
Well done ST!!. Singaporeans are not FOOLS.
