INDONESIA - Former South Lampung deputy regent Wendy Melfa was sentenced to four years in prison and fined Rp 200 million(S$25,400) after being declared guilty of corruption.

Presiding Judge Binsar Siregar at the Tanjungkarang District Court said on Monday that Wendy was guilty of embezzling the land acquisition budget of the Sebalang Steam Power Plant (PLTU) project.

The verdict was lighter than the 10-year sentence sought by prosecutors. Wendy, however, said he would appeal.

"With all due respect, I will file an appeal. I am innocent. I did not cause the state losses. I am a victim here," said Wendy after the trial.

Wendy was named a suspect when he was deemed to be involved in the land provision of the Sebalang PLTU project, located in Sebalang village, Tarahan.

The Lampung Prosecutor's Office claimed that officials at the South Lampung administration undervalued the taxable value of property (NJOP) used to set the benchmark price of the sold land.

The lower the NJOP, the cheaper the land.

The 66 hectares of land were sold for Rp 5,000 per square meter, while officials later resold the land for Rp 50,000 per meter square.
