SINGAPORE: A former taxi driver was jailed six months on Thursday by a district court for entering into a sham marriage with a Vietnamese national.

43-year-old Ang Teck Khee admitted that he had received a sum of S$7,900 from 25-year-old Doan Thi Thu for entering into a marriage of convenience and for making false statements to obtain visit passes for her.

Doan has already been dealt with and was jailed six months by a district court.

Investigations showed that sometime in April this year, Doan approached Ang and asked for his help to allow her to remain in Singapore after her student pass had expired.

Ang then proposed that they enter into a marriage of convenience so that he could help sponsor her visit pass applications to extend her stay in Singapore.

He informed her that she would need to pay him for the marriage arrangements. Doan agreed.

The pair later had their marriage solemnised at a chalet in Goldkist Beach Resort.

After the solemnisation, Doan paid Ang S$7,900 for entering into the marriage. She did not stay with him at his home in Marine Terrace.

In mitigation, Ang's lawyer Mr Dinagaran told the court that his client had multiple serious medical conditions, including end-stage renal failure.

Dinagaran said that Ang had incurred hefty medical bills, which were wiping out his savings.

"It's not a case where he is not working and looking for easy money," he said, adding that Ang had agreed to enter into the sham marriage out of desperation.

Ang could have been jailed up to 10 years and fined up to S$10,000. - CNA/fa
