The article, 'Singapore's phantom workers' (Feb22), reported that some coffee-shop operators would rather flout the law than hire Singaporeans, and one of the excuses is that local workers are too picky.

But do the foreigners make better workers? I don't think so.
As a regular coffee-shop customer, I encounter these foreign workers - who are mostly from China - almost daily.
Most of them take customers' orders reluctantly. Many of them do not understand English or know the local food names. Many also do not seem interested in picking up English or accepting the culture here.
More coffee-shop operators are hiring China workers to cook as well. But do these workers know, or care, how local dishes should be prepared? If not, the standard of local food will surely suffer. Vernon Sim

Then again, if all coffee shops in the vicinity are as bad in service, then what choice do we have? Anyway, I'm a firm advocate of boycotting restaurants or food stalls that don't provide good service, regardless of how good the food is. And this applies to foreign and Singaporean service staff. If it's bad, it's bad. Nationality has nothing to do with it. That's why I can't understand why people are willing to put up with extremely rude service (like the Soup Nazi in the 90s sitcom, Seinfeld) just for the food? The food may be good but the total experience sucks.
