SINGAPORE : The World Cup kicks off on Friday and some fans are on the hunt to watch the matches without paying subscription for cable television.

MediaCorp's news team went undercover in search of shops that sell the Internet protocol television device, which is illegal in Singapore.

The device costs between S$120 and S$150, which is higher than the S$94 subscription fee for existing SingTel and StarHub subscribers, as well as the additional installation charge for non-subscribers.

Our news team also understands that the device does not deliver entertainment from thousands of channels from the Internet as promised.

Another alternative is a S$20 antenna, which allows users to catch matches from channels in Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.

However, distributors said it is not reliable - as the reception and quality of pictures depend on the area it is used in.
