A young Florida couple were looking for takers, anyone whom they could sell their 2-month-old infant to, in a shopping center parking lot, and for the bargain price of $30.
According to the Escambia County Sheriff's Office, Robert Ellingson, 25, and Maghen Duvala, 23, tried selling their infant to a few teenagers, who were at the mall's parking lot. Ellingson and Duvala pulled up to the teens in their SUV and propositioned them. First the couple offered the kids beer and it was declined. Ellingson then asked the teens, if they were interested in purchasing the infant for $30.
The taken aback teens, who are members of Teen Challenge Ministries were at the mall doing a fundraiser car wash in the parking lot. At first the mortified teens thought it was a really bad joke. "But then the infant's mother yelled to the group that they were trying to sell the baby. And one of the teens called us," said sheriff's spokesman Glenn Austin.
The couple was arrested and will be charged with four counts each of child neglect. The child, whose sex and name are being withheld, was taken into custody by the Department of Children & Families.
Police reports state, just an hour earlier, the determined couple tried to sell the baby at a bank parking lot that was just a few blocks away from the mall.
