This year, we cast away the yawnsome prototype and bring you the guys who made an unexpected impact on the local entertainment scene. CHARLENE CHUA and JULIANA JUNE RASUL report...

1. ADRIAN PANG

AT 43, this huncle (hunky uncle, that is) has still got it.

Who else can get away with posing in skimpy trunks next to young hotties in Channel 5 drama Polo Boys?

Apart from the well-built physique, there's also the Best Drama Performance by an Actor win at the recent Asian Television Awards for Red Thread.

It is Adrian's first win for a serious role.

The father of two boys is like fine wine and is getting better with age.

But tell him about the nomination and he shocks with the reply: 'I would bow out if I could.'

He explained that he knows his demographic - we take it to mean that his fans are non-voters - and cites fellow nominees like Singapore Idol 3 contestant Duane Ho's 'Pussycat Dolls impressions' and the 'lovely' Fighting Spiders boys as tough competition.

'Would I win? Absolutely not,' he says in British-accented English.

Why so negative, Adrian?

In a bid to deflect the question, he went on the offensive. 'Win, got money or not? Now that we've just gone through a recession, no money, no need to talk,' he said with a laugh.

The self-confessed 'practical guy' added that he doesn't think much of honour and prestige. We're willing to bet that he'll change his mind if he wins.

2. EDWIN GOH, LIANGSHIJIE AND FREDERICK FIELDING

Who would have thought the three youngsters would steal the hearts of viewers when Channel 5 drama Fighting Spiders aired early this year?

The unlikely trio of best friends in the show share the same close bonds off-screen as well.

And they have a sense of humour too.

Said Edwin, 15: 'Our chances of winning are very very high. The readers of The New Paper are young right? The three of us are young. So you vote for your own age group.

'Besides, our fatty (referring to 11-year-old Shijie) is cuter than the other fatty (referring to Duane Ho).'

Edwin admitted that it's 'cool' to be nominated. He hadn't expected the television series to propel them to small-time fame.

Briton Frederick, 16, sounded taken aback when we called him.

'This is quite surprising! I feel so honoured and flattered,' he said.

He picked Adrian as most likely to win.

Why?

'Have you watched him in Polo Boys? Girls will drool over him,' he said.

Asked how they stood out from the competition, he said: 'At least we have a white guy on this team (referring to himself).' The three are now filming Fighting Spiders 2. That's how hot these boys are.

3. DUANE HO

He may not have the looks of Faizal Isa or Farhan Shah but this 16-year-old Singapore Idol 3 finalist sure has guts. He tackled Lady Gaga not once, but twice, on live TV.

He unabashedly talks about his Beyonce obsession. Online, there are pictures of him crying like a baby throughout her performance at F1 Rocks in September.

He also - bless his heart - attempted a Whitney Houston song on the show.

When told of his nomination, he said: 'Yeah, I guess you can call me a dude! I'm really proud of what I've done on the show. It's made me so much more confident.'

After weeks of getting flak from the Idol judges for his age, looks and song choices, Duane, now out of the competition, hit back at a certain judge.

'(Ken Lim) kept telling me I wouldn't make it because I was too young, that I should go back to my studies,' he said. 'If they thought 16 was too young, why did they have that as the minimum age?'

Duane was just as huffy about his appearance.

'Honestly, I don't think I looked that bad,' he said.

Did he think he stood a chance against quality (Adrian) and quantity (the Fighting Spiders boys)?

You could almost hear the blush in his voice as he said: 'Maybe the people who are voting will see my daring choices as something that makes me stand out.'
