SETIU: Five people including a toddler were killed in an accident in Jalan Permaisuri-Penarik near Kampung Nyatoh here. The collision between a car and a van at 2pm yesterday caused the death of siblings – Noorafzan Efizal_man Sidek (inset), 16, Noorazryelmy Sidek, 29, and Noorazydyelwy Sidek, 32, who was the driver of the car – and Mek Wook Yakob, 79, who was travelling in the van. Noorazydyelwy’s one-year-old daughter, Nor Amysha Maisarah, died while on the way to Setiu Hospital. Noorazydyelwy, who worked at a university here, is believed to have lost control of the car because the road was slippery after incessant rain since yesterday morning.

A tragedy: A passer-by looking at the wreckage of the vehicle the family were in at Setiu, Terengganu.

The impact of the accident caused Noorazydyelwy to be tossed out from the car and thrown onto the bonnet. The family members, who hailed from Kampung Bukit Cina, Pasir Akar in Besut, were on their way to a fish market in Penarik here when the car skidded and collided head-on with the van which was ferrying 13 passengers.

The van, which was on the way from Permaisuri here to Kuala Terengganu, was coming from the opposite direction. Setiu OCPD Deputy Supt Shaik Othman Abdul Hamid said four passengers in the van sustained serious injuries while six escaped with minor injuries. Noorazydyelwy’s wife Che Marina Awang, 23, when met at the Setiu Hospital mortuary, said she had asked him to buy fish so that they could have it for dinner.

“My husband suggested that we all dine together as his brothers were all off-duty and would be at home,” she said. “It is unfortunate that it had to end this way,” she said in between sobs. She also said that she did not expect him to bring along their daughter to the market as she was watching her favourite cartoon show at the time.
