SINGAPORE: The Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) has smashed a drug syndicate believed to be distributing heroin in Singapore. Five men, including a suspected drug syndicate leader have been arrested, the agency announced on Thursday (June 26).

Officers seized 2.1 kg of heroin, estimated to be worth S$220,000. CNB says it is enough to sustain some 1,000 addicts for a week.

Several teams of officers fanned out in Jurong West for a pre-dawn sting on Wednesday. They tailed a 47-year-old suspected ringleader and a 66-year-old suspected trafficker, as well as a 34-year-old Malaysian man.

955g of heroin was found in the Malaysian man's vehicle, along with S$10,000 cash.

CNB later arrested a 44-year-old Singaporean man the Malaysian had met. 480g of heroin and 90g of synthetic cannabis were seized from him.

A 32-year-old, believed to be on his way to meet the Malaysian man, was also caught. S$7,200 was recovered from him.

If convicted of drug trafficking, all five suspects may face the death penalty. - CNA/do
