KFC Thinks Black People Like Fried Chicken or Something

By Chris on January 8, 2010

Kentucky Fried Chicken pulled an Australian TV commercial and apologized about it’s racist tone. The commercial, seen after the jump, shows a white Australian guy surrounded by black people. He claims in the commercial the the best way out of his “awkward” situation was to give them a bucket of chicken. KFC released this statement:

We apologize for any misinterpretation of the ad as it was not meant to offend anyone. It is a light-hearted reference to the West Indian cricket team … The ad was reproduced online in the US without KFC’s permission, where we are told a culturally-based stereotype exists, leading to the incorrect assertion of racism.

So taming a rowdy crowd of black people with a bucket of chicken is only unacceptable in America?

Are you familar with the cultural context of the West Indian Cricket Team?

Apparently it is acceptable within their culture.

To reproduce it elsewhere may hit cross-cultural nerves.

That is what KFC is saying.

And they are right to say so as the ad was not meant for the American audience nor meant to allude to the American Blacks.
