Students cautioned against Singapore educational institutions
Colombo (PTI): Students in Sri Lanka have been cautioned against pursuing courses in certain institutions in Singapore which charge high fees and fail to fulfil the promise of providing immediate jobs.
After receiving a number of complaints from Sri Lankan students who are pursuing courses at institutions in Singapore, the High Commission of Sri Lanka issued a statement advising the students to observe due diligence in order to find out the authenticity of an academic institution in the city state.
"Most of these institutions are not of repute or of academic standing but the fees charged range between SD 4,000 to 7,000 (equivalent to SLR 300,000500,000) for a six month to one year course," the Sri Lankan High Commission in Singapore said in the statement.
Students are attracted by Sri Lankan agents, addressing overseas academic placement, who in turn get a substantial commission of the fee, it said.
"The High Commission of Sri Lanka in Singapore strongly advises students, who intend to follow a course of study in Singapore through the assistance of an agent, to be extremely cautious," it said.
The Ministry of Higher Education or the High Commission of Sri Lanka could assist the students in this endeavour, the statement said.
Most often, these students have been told that after the successful completion of the course, they would be offered job training and employment either in Singapore or in Malaysia.
