BUKIT KAYU HITAM: The Anti-Smuggling Unit (UPP) have detained a local man after he was caught trying to smuggle fireworks worth RM3,000 at the Bukit Kayu Hitam Customs, Immigration and Quarantine (CIQ) Complex here on Monday.
Its commander, Assistant Superintendent Shahidan Ladin, said his men stopped the 38-year-old suspect's Proton Persona at a road-block near the CIQ Complex.
Shahidan said the suspect tried to play it cool when he was asked to pull-over but the UPP officers managed to sense something amiss with the man.
"During the inspection, we found the fireworks on the rear passenger seat and in the boot," he said yesterday.
He said the fireworks were to be delivered to a supplier from Penang.
Shahidan said the UPP had stepped up its inspection and monitoring at the border during the upcoming festive season, especially fireworks smuggling.
He said the case had been classified under Section 135(1)(e) of the Customs Act 1967 for transporting prohibited items, and carries fines of between 10 and 20 times the value of the goods, or maximum imprisonment of three years, or both upon conviction.
