IPOH - What sounded like festive fireworks turned out to be gunshots which killed a man outside his home in Taman Sejati Dua, Sri Manjung.
Manjung acting OCPD Deputy Supt Ahmad Mat Isa said family members at a nearby home had thought the noise came from fireworks.
When they heard a neighbour suddenly screaming, they went outside and were horrified to see Steven Ling Hock Chuan, 33, sprawled on their house porch.
"The victim had just returned from dinner and was about to go out to meet a friend when an assailant shot him twice in the head and back.
"He was rushed to the Seri Manjung Hospital but was pronounced dead at about 11pm," he added.
DSP Ahmad said police were investigating the motive of the attack.
The victim's elder brother, who declined to be named, said Ling used to work at his car workshop at Kampung Acheh.
"He quit about eight months ago but he continued to come over to help," he said, adding that Ling, who had a wife and two children, was the youngest among five siblings.
