GEORGE TOWN: It was a torturous two-hour wait for an assistant crane operator who was stung in the leg by a hornet before he was rescued by firemen from a tower crane about 15 storeys from the ground. The worker, in his 20s, was unable to climb down from the cabin of the crane as he was in too much pain.
The “stinging” incident happened at about 2.30pm yesterday when the man was working inside the cabin of the tower crane at a construction site near the Jelutong coastal highway. His supervisor received a distress call from other workers, who got to know about the victim’s condition, and immediately alerted the Fire and Rescue Department.
Rescue operation: The worker being brought down in the steel case at the construction site yesterday.
Perak Road fire station senior officer Roslan Ahmad said a team of six firemen rushed to the scene on receiving the call at about 3pm. They wanted to use a Super Gyro skylift in the rescue operation but it was not high enough to reach the victim. “We then sought the assistance of the site contractor who sent my men and a paramedic up the cabin using another tower crane.
“It took us nearly 90 minutes before the victim was brought down on a steel case accompanied by a fireman,” he said when met at the site. The victim was brought down at about 4.30pm and immediately rushed to the Penang Hospital where he was admitted for observation.
