Aliburak Coskundeniz, 30, from Turkey, and his two Iranian friends, Rouhollah Ghasem Khah Hassankiadeh, 33, and Hossein Fiuji, 23, pleaded guilty to committing the offence at Doggie and Me pet shop here at about 3.30pm on Aug 25.
According to the facts, the trio had walked into the shop on the pretext of buying dog shampoo.
They handed to the owner United States currency but the shopkeeper insisted they paid him in Malaysian ringgit and took out a RM50 note as a sample to show them what it looked like.
Aliburak took the note, ran out of the shop and got into a car in which his two Iranian accomplices were waiting.
They were detained shortly after by policemen in the area.
The accused, who were represented by R. Sritheran, pleaded to magistrate Mohamed Aznin Mohamed Ariff for a lenient sentence claiming they were not familiar with the Malaysian currency.
However, deputy public prosecutor Sariza Ismail said their excuse was unacceptable since they had visited the country twice prior to their arrest.
