<!-- story content : start --> TWO companies were on Tuesday fined a total of $180,000 for breaching the Workplace Safety and Health Act. In the first case, contractor Tat Ho Builder was handed a $100,000 fine after worker Pichaimuthu Dhanikodi fell to his death from the inclined roof of a house off Yio Chu Kang Road. The Indian national, hired by subcontractor New Sun Electrical Contractor, had climbed wooden scaffolds to get onto the roof to install a lightning conductor. Investigations showed that Tat Ho had failed to install safe and proper access to the main roof, causing the worker to resort to climbing the wooden scaffolds intended for plasterers and painters to work on the external walls of the house. Neither did it ensure that a safety briefing was given to the worker. It had also failed to appoint a trained safety and health coordinator for the worksite who would have identified the unsafe conditions on the roof access. In the second case, Buana Shipping & Marine was fined $80,000 after a workplace accident killed trailer driver Lee Kim Poh in July last year. A forklift operator was unloading steel beams from the trailer when a bundle toppled and pinned Mr Lee underneath, killing him on the spot.
