The Government's move yesterday to take taxis out of the Certificate of Entitlement (COE) bidding exercise starting next month led to cautious cheer among both car dealers and taxi operators, even as they awaited details on allowable taxi fleet growth - to be revealed next week - by the Land Transport Authority (LTA).

Taxi companies will no longer be part of bi-monthly COE bidding exercises, paying instead the Prevailing Quota Premium - the average of quota premiums over the previous three months - for the small car category or Category A. The COEs used for new taxis will be taken from the Open category.

Car dealers said the shift of taxis away from Category A COEs will mitigate the impact of sharp quota cuts for small cars over the next six months. The 37-per-cent cut in Category A COEs for the next six months had led to premiums shooting up by 16 per cent to S$68,656 in the last bidding exercise last week.

"We might see some correction for Category A COE premiums, but it will be tough to go below the S$60,000 mark," said Mr Ron Lim, general manager of Nissan agent Tan Chong Motor.

how about another coe category for bigger luxury cars and sports cars above 3.5 litres with very limited number of coes?

or are our civil servants thinking of their self interests and are actually thinking of driving bentleys and ferraris themselves?

obviously nobody has woken up to the stark reality that the high level of education that our so called champion scholars may have received does not necessarily mean that they embody good and steady morals and principles.

The next thing the farking LTA must do is to disallow the traders from bidding on behalf of customers.

until now den chg. jiak liao bee. knn.

LTY fears for his job. Anyway, those elites in LTA also jiak liao bee.

A taxi driver shared with me that he once ferried a LTA engineer whose role is to design Singapore roads. The driver told me he was astounded when he realised this LTA engineer don't possess Class 3 license.
