Filipina, Bangladeshi to be lashed for illicit sex
Published Nov 16 2010
A Filipina maid and her Bangladeshi lover have been ordered to be whipped 100 times and be deported for having sex out of wedlock in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates. Gulf News reported Monday that the Filipina, identfied only as NM will be lashed 100 times for "unlawful sex" while her Bangladeshi boyfriend, SM received the same sentence for adultery and also jailed for a year for entering the house of the maid's sponsor without permission. The Sharjah Sharia Court ordered both be deported after serving their sentences.
Foreign workers in the UAE and most other Gulf states must be sponsored by an employer to work in the country. In some cases, employers hold the worker's passport and can deny permission to change jobs. The Filipina's employer saw the Bangladeshi leaving the house and reported to the police. NM admitted bringing SM to her employer's house each time the family was out.
According to Gulf News, Muslim foreigners who commit adultery would be lashed and deported, while non-Muslims could jailed and deported. Both NM and SM are Muslims, it said. The UAE aims to be an international business and tourism hub and relies heavily on foreign workers, but also seeks to maintain traditional mores, leading to frequent arrests of foreigners for offences such as sex out of wedlock or kissing in public.
