This year's FI event, the organisers, OBS & HPL only managed to sell about 40% of their tickets.

They ended up having to give tickets away for free to charity organisations & RCs just to pack in the crowds.

It costs $150m to host a FI race in S'pore, and out of which $90m (taxpayers' money) is picked up by the govt.

If OBS can terminate the 5 yr contract which he's already committed, he would gladly do so to cut his losses.

Where your source that only 40% were sold?

If correct, sign of things to come.

IRs....no way they can even break-even in the short term. may be a losing money proposition from day 1.

My source OBS's right hand man, T H Seng who is chairman of S'pore FI racing.

Actually I believe F1 tickets have been unsold in many countries. Exceptions are Monaco, Italy etc.

I'm not surprised that many F1 tickets are unsold. With the traffic blockade and jam, it's hard to get there and hard to come back. For what? Just to sit down there and watch race cars zooming past your eyes in split seconds around and around?

Last year when it started in Singapore, the idea being sold was that tourists and even local fans would book nearby hotel rooms at exhorbitant rates for comfortable window views. That idea has completely collapsed by now.

As for the IRs coming up, I can't see too many Singaporeans visiting the casinos, even for gamblers, especially with the $100 entry fee. They'll find somewhere else to gamble. We all know Singapore has lots of gamblers, most of them also horse racing punters. Look at the attendences from Bukit Timah to Kranji. Only a small percentage willing to take the trouble to go there even at entry fee of just $5.

Even if illegal, they choose and sustain the business of neighbourhood bookmakers and runners; more convenient. Singapore Turf Club finally gave up centralised bet taking at the race track and opened branches at selection locations.

are you giving them ideas of taking the IRs into HDB heartlands?

Actually what is wrong with that? Maybe not as "big" as the IRs but something small like poker machines in all community centres.

remind me of tang garden, singapore flyers and crazy horse.

all going or gone under.

we can put F1 and IR under it soon.

in 1970-1980 PAP can do no wrong.

in 1997-2009 PAP cannot do anything right.

Take a 2-ways boat from Clarke Quay to Singapore Flyer :p

You sure TH Seng say that to you?
I will ask him to SUE you for false information.
My media says 96% of tickets sold.
And that is the TRUTH.:D

yeah cause it is expensive
and they have a core fan base, that go to different country to watch the race.

some of these core fan went to singapore. but in general F1 have small fan base compare to other sport.

with the recession, seat will be empty for sure. i guess monaco and monza are close to the core fan base. nice place to visit.

singapore so far away.
