Fewer drug mules now, thanks to crackdown
KUALA LUMPUR: The number of Malaysians arrested for being drug mules overseas dropped after increased enforcement against drug syndicates, mainly those from West Africa. Acting Federal Anti-Narcotics department director Datuk Othman Harun said that during the first eight months of the year, 19 Malaysians were arrested abroad on suspicion of being drug mules, compared to 54 last year.
“This year, we have had many successes against Iranians who tried to smuggle in drugs but at the same time, we have also been hitting hard against the African drug syndicates who have been recruiting our citizens as drug mules,” he said at Bukit Aman yesterday.
Othman said that up to September, a total of 18 Africans ,aged between 19 and 40, were arrested for numerous drug offences and were investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act. “In those arrests, we seized a total of 96kg of ganja worth almost RM288,000, with each kg costing RM3,000,” he said.
