Rates at sports facilities unchanged for over a decade

I REFER to Mr Edmund Goh's letter last Saturday, 'No concession - a two-hour tennis session a week during peak periods would make students poorer by $76 a month', and would like to commend the efforts of Mr Goh and his friends to keep fit and healthy through sports.
The Singapore Sports Council (SSC) has provided accessible and affordable sports facilities to the public at large since its inception in 1973, in order to encourage Singaporeans to lead a healthy and active lifestyle. Our rates to use all sports facilities have remained unchanged for more than a decade, to ensure they remain affordable.
We would like to clarify that the concession for senior citizens of $2.50 an hour is applicable only under the senior citizen family concession and during non-peak hours (7am to 6pm on weekdays). The senior citizen family concession was introduced in 2006 to encourage seniors and their family members to use SSC facilities such as swimming pools, gymnasiums and the various courts, together, during non-peak hours. This is to encourage family bonding through sports, as well as facilitate an active lifestyle for the whole family.
To be eligible for this concession, the senior citizen must be accompanied by at least one, but not more than four, members during play.
In view of the high demand and usage of sports facilities during peak hours, (6pm to 10pm on weekdays, 7am to 10pm on weekends and all day on public holidays), we are unable to extend any concession rates. We encourage Mr Goh and his friends to patronise our sports facilities during non-peak hours and enjoy the hourly flat rate of $3.50 at our tennis courts, which is a concession rate to benefit all users, including students.
