'It takes two hands to clap. The taunting by Vietnamese fans might have gone overboard.' MR AARON TAN: 'I refer to Thursday's letter by Mr Simon Owen Khoo, 'Shame on you, rowdy Singaporeans'. While I do not condone the actions by the Singapore fans who assaulted the Vietnamese fans, I believe that it takes two hands to clap. From reading the reports, I believe that if the Vietnamese had been gracious victors and had not taunted the local fans, the Singapore fans would not have retaliated or reacted the way they did. I have attended enough football matches involving the national team to know that on the whole, local fans are very sporting and do not resort to violence. While taunting and goading opposing fans are part and parcel of football games everywhere, and are generally taken in the right spirit, the taunting by the Vietnamese fans might have gone overboard. It would be good to hear the Singapore fans' side of the story. On a more positive note, the Football Association of Singapore can take heart in the passion of the local fans. If they did not feel strongly about our team, they would not have cared if Singapore had lost, and would not have reacted the way they did.'
