SINGAPORE Island Country Club's (SICC) legal woes look set to drag on into the New Year with a wrongly suspended member now suing the club for defamation.

Madam Kay Swee Pin, 54, has been in a two-year legal wrangle with the swank club in Upper Thomson where she has been a member since 1992.
In May 2006, she was suspended from the club after its governing body, a 12-member general committee, ruled that she had lied about her marriage in order to get her husband Ng Kong Yeam spousal benefits and free use of the club facilities.
But Madam Kay contested the dismissal and eventually won in the Court of Appeal which ruled that her suspension was wrong and ordered costs and damages against the club.
She was awarded $72,000 in damages by a High Court assistant registrar last September. The club's legal fees are also said to be over $200,000.
Madam Kay's defamation suit, which was filed in the High Court - which handles claims of over $250,000 - last week, lists the club and the 12 members of the general committee who suspended her as defendants.
She is taking issue with the notices posted on clubhouse notice boards announcing her one-year suspension.
Among other things, the notices had said she made a false declaration about her spouse in 1992 and acted in a manner prejudicial to the interests of the club.
In court papers filed by her lawyer S.H. Almenoar, Madam Kay alleges that the words 'seriously injured her reputation, character and credit' in the eyes of club members and others who would have read the notices.
She claims the injury was made all the more serious because the notices were kept up on the boards for a year and were not removed by the committee despite being urged to do so by her.

She alleges that the slur was further compounded by the publication of the notice in the June 2006 issue of the club's newsletter, which is circulated among members of the club. Club membership is understood to be about 17,000 members.
In March last year, two months after the Court of Appeal decision, Madam Kay wrote to all the defendants seeking redress but it is understood that nothing came out of it.
The club, through its lawyers Ang Cheng Hock and S. Ramesh from Allen & Gledhill, are expected to contest her claims and a pre-trial conference is set for next month.
Madam Kay's suit is not the only fallout from club spats that are set to be settled in court.
Last month, a High Court pre-trial conference was convened following a suit by a sacked general manager of the Singapore Swimming Club (SSC), Mr Richard Phua Gin Choon.
Mr Phua, 58, who had served for a year, was dismissed last August after allegedly failing to conduct his duties 'in a reasonably competent fashion' and for 'serious misconduct'.
After being served with the dismissal letter on the day he was sacked, Mr Phua was escorted out of the club premises by the security manager and told he could not enter again without approval, according to court papers he filed.
He claims the allegations to support the dismissal, as stated in the letter signed by club president Freddie Koh, are untrue.
Among the issues is whether damage caused to a management committee member's car parked in the club basement was 'accidental' or 'intentional'.
Mr Phua alleges he was fired because he refused to change his conclusion following an investigation that the damage caused in the incident was accidental.
Through lawyers from Wee Tay & Lim, he is seeking compensation of six months' salary in lieu of notice and also damages as he claims his prospects to be employed in three other private clubs elsewhere as a general manager were affected by his dismissal.
But the SSC, through lawyers from Legal Solutions, is disputing his allegations and making a counter-claim.
Among other things, it wants to be indemnified for any claims by members over how their e-mail addresses were allegedly leaked out to Mr Phua. The sacking and the suit comes in the wake of a new management committee led by Mr Koh which was elected in May last year.
