THE People's Action Party man in Potong Pasir, Mr Sitoh Yih Pin, on Thursday night urged residents to vote for themselves and their loved ones instead of shouldering the responsibility of putting opposition voices into parliament.
At a rally in the single-seat ward, he recounted his recent meeting with an elderly man who snubbed him five years ago because he wanted to see an alternative voice in Parliament.
The man had a change of heart this year. He told Mr Sitoh: 'For the last 27 years, I have bore this responsibility for Singapore's democracy... Now is about time I vote for myself and my family.'
There are many such people in Potong Pasir, said Mr Sitoh, adding: 'Maybe it's about time to say: 'let's think for ourselves and our family and our children and our parents'.'
He is up against Singapore People's Party's Lina Chiam, wife of opposition veteran Mr Chiam See Tong, who has left his stronghold to contest in the Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC.
Mr Sitoh, 47, who lost twice to Mr Chiam in 2001 and 2006, has declined offers by the PAP to let him contest in a group representation constituency team. He has also asked the PAP bigwigs to stay away from the Potong Pasir contest
