Unrecognised master's degree a puzzle

<!-- by line --><!-- end by line -->

I REFER to Ms Madeleine Chang's letter last Saturday, "No preschool job after master's: The $26,000 mistake".
Wheelock College is a reputable university in the United States. To my understanding, apart from Seed Institute, Wheelock College has also tied up with Ngee Ann Polytechnic to offer bachelor's degrees in early childhood education.
For such a reputable university, it is a surprise that the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports does not recognise the master's degree.

Non-recognition of post-grad degree not an obstacle

<!-- by line --><!-- end by line -->

I REFER to Ms Madeleine Chang's letter "No preschool job after master's: The $26,000 mistake", and would first like to encourage Ms Chang to look at the issue from a broad educational perspective.
After going through the master's programme, you would have made great strides forward in your intellectual development, improving on your abilities to analyse and synthesise information, conduct research and communicate findings, to name a few. So congratulate yourself on a job well done.
However, I do understand your frustration and have worked with staff who face the same dilemma. Currently, I have an employee who is completing her bachelor's degree in early childhood. She is a very gifted early childhood teacher because she has high interpersonal intelligence and vast experience in other service sectors. She did not want to do the diploma course because she would not be moving forward in her personal development.
Although the Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports does not recognise her qualifications, I have kept her in my employment because I know that with her passion for teaching and love for children, coupled with the training she gets in the bachelor's degree, she will be outstanding.
Indeed it has proven to be so; she is able to apply the theories learnt and thinking processes acquired in her course into the daily classroom challenges, resulting in a high quality of teaching. From the management's standpoint, she is highly trainable and at the ground level, she is well loved by children and parents alike.
A good early childhood teacher has to love children and be gifted in interacting with them. Given the prerequisites, then, they need to have a good grasp of the theories underlying our understanding of young children's development and suitable teaching strategies. Finally, they must be like a scientist, able to observe, analyse and apply the right theories and strategies in practical ways. The more highly trained they are, the better their ability to do the above and the better a teacher they make.
So, I invite you to send me your resume or give me a call to explore engagement possibilities.

Dear Ms madeleine chang,

Dr Vivian balakrishnan, Minister of community development, say our ministry's quota of Singaporean employees have been met.

In line with the MCDYS effort to integrate new citizens, only foreigners will be considered for any openings.

Thank you for your kind attention.

In other words, she is saying Gahmen ccb....never mind, they no want you, i want!

This is sad when fake degrees or FT folks pulling off impersonation of family/friends with "borrowed" degrees are welcomed warmly but our own folks aren't.

To use the MIW's own words, the foreigners are hungrier, this means they will do what they can to come here by hook or by crook, hence expect to see more fake degrees.

I even heard of folks who bought others identities and frequently under declaring their age, meaning they declare as 30 even when they are already 36 or 37, giving them additional years of work in Singapore. Unfortunately, the folks up there are either too complacent or sleeping on the job.

To Ms Grace Ng, no matter what your intentions are for offering the chance, you gave it to a Singaporean, may the powers that be bless you, your family and your descendants.

My sentiments exactly. In this strange tale of role reversal, a private sector company is actually "regulating" the unfair labour policy of the public sector.
