The new distance-based fare is just a "price hike in disguise" says STOMPer shallowpocket after looking at some "far-fetched" examples on these LTA flyers of how much commuters can save when they travel long distances.
According to the STOMPer, the examples shown in the flyer seem unlikely to occur often.
He says:
"These two pictures were taken from the transport flyer on the new fares charged by the public bus and train companies.
"The examples given are hypothetical and quite far-fetched.
"If you take bus service 66 from Upper Bt Timah Rd to Newton MRT station and then take a train to Raffles City Shopping Centre, you will save 10 cents.
"For a resident living in Upper Bt Timah Rd the nearest shopping centres are Bt Timah Plaza, Beauty World and West Mall. Nobody in his right mind will go shopping at Raffles City unless the particular item is not available in the nearby shopping malls and also only if he has a deep pocket.
"Another example given is that if you take bus service 21 from Tampines to Changi Rd and then switch to bus service 7 to bring you to the Botanic Gardens, you will save 35 cents.
"I wonder how often Tampines residents visit the Botanic Gardens.
"If a Tampines resident were to work in Gleneagles Hospital the journey will take about 82 minutes and I don't think many Tampines residents can afford the luxury of time to travel such a distance.
"My retired friend who lives in Queenstown takes a train from Queenstown MRT Station to Changi Airport thrice a week to meet up with his friends. Previously he paid 69 cents and now he has to pay 86 cents.
"He has since decided to cut down his journey to once a week to save on the hike in fares."
