Written by Our Correspondent
According to a most unbelievable article by Kor Kian Beng published in the Striats Times today, “most Singaporeans like this year’s Budget” because it help them tackle bread-and-butter issues.
Mr Kor based his conclusion on a telephone survey of 800 Sinagporeans conducted between Feb 24 and March 3 by the PAP’s feedback unit, REACH in which “at least 92 percent” gave the Budget the “thumbs up”.
However, a detailed study of the over 300 or so comments posted on REACH forum within the same period showed that an overwhelming majority of the commentators are unhappy with the Budget.
The first comment posted on REACH set the tone for the rest of the discussion:
“Is sharing when everything is going fine? A friend told me his plight of money not enough very often he faced arrears in his utility bills, conservancy and during this time instead of getting an understanding ‘public’ officer with a listening ear he got his electricity cut, a legal letter to sue him and repossession of his flat. Where got share in the prosperity of the nation? I wonder the govt is aware of the humiliating treatment by public officers. Hvae the public officers ever stop and think why this person is in arrears and defaulted in his payment? Are they only executing machine and not thinking human beings? The obvious reason is the poor man is financial difficulty and he can’t pay but instead he got was pressure after pressure.”
hello hello immediately replied:
“As an individual, I am very very disappointed with this year budget. I do not get to enjoy parent, spouse course fee reliefs, etc, get very little savings from property tax as I lived in HDB flat, but overall have to pay more tax because the 20% tax rebate for personal income tax is now being taken away!!! Aiyah….”
joke put it bluntly:
“The govt sucks away so much money from us and only give such a miserly amount of benefits. The amount of benefits is so pathetic and miserable, I don’t even dare to think about growth. I really don’t know what to say. Ha Ha !!”
pure Singaporean felt the Budget did not address the concerns of Singaporeans about the relentless influx of foreign workers:
“Are we really out of the great depression on the economy? I did not feel it but this year I felt the pinch of it as compared with all the previous recessions. I used to think that it is easy to make money in our beautiful city but not anymore when the goverment allowed foreign workers to take the jobs of the middle class like operation executives.
The goverment said we are choosy but do they realised that we own the same education but the foreigner just asked three or four hundred dollars lower and they got the jobs. We Singaporean had to pay the everything (mortages of hdb houses, utility bills and all the extras and cost abt $3000/- per mths but foreigner stayed crampy and share the rental flat and they sent home their money which does not circle back to the mainstream of the country economy and they can survive because they only paid $400 per mths rental and the rest they sent home to their mainland which had a very low cost of living.”
Ready for change is bitterly disappointed:
“I am pretty disappointed that they are still taking a lukewarm approach to handle the foreign worker issue. To me more should be done. Imposing numeric on certain sectors like service, clerical, engineer, IT, cusotmer service is a must. All these jobs are jobs that singaporean want. The employer’s mentality is cheaper labour the better, even if the levy is increased, still is cheaper to hire them. Looks like people have to vote against such unpopular policies if this issue is not further addressed.”
With such a dedicated “nation-building” press singing its praises on a regular basis, it is little wonder that PAP MPs are “all deaf to criticisms” to quote from Minister Lim Swee Say.
While Singaporeans grumble, complain and lament, the PAP ministers and MPs continue to live high up in their ivory towers, doing nothing except patting one another on their backs for a “good job” done, fed with misleading half-truths, propaganda and myths from the sycophantic media which is judged as the only “trusted” source of information in Singapore according to Minister Lui Tuck Yew.
Despite widespread frustration, unhappiness and anger on the ground against the PAP, it appears that genuine feedback is not getting through to the REACH units which are conveniently brushed aside.
Singaporeans are only left with one option to register their displeasure against the PAP – vote them out at the next general election before it is too late.
