Family suspects interference in David's case

The Jakarta Post , Jakarta | Wed, 06/10/2009 1:02 PM | National

The family of David Hartanto Widjaja, an Indonesian student who died at Singapore's Nanyang Technological University (NTU) on March 2, and a local verification team doubt the Singaporean court process of his death.

The coroner court under the subordinate court in Singapore has been processing the case to decide whether David's death was a suicide. If it not, then the case will be forwarded to the criminal court.

However, it appeared the court process was intentionally directed to a conclusion of suicide despite evidence showing a strong possibility of murder, according to David's family and the verification team.

"We have strong evidence that he was murdered but that fact was not brought up in the court," David's father, Hartono Wijaya, told a press conference Tuesday at the National Commission on Human Rights.

"Testimonies from witnesses presented by the NTU were fictitious and none of our witnesses was brought to the court."

Djaja Surya Atmadja, a forensic expert from the Faculty of Medicine in the University of Indonesia, said any forensic doctor could see from the forensic report that David's body had defense wounds, and that there were no wounds of suicide.

Djaya and another forensic doctor, Evi Untoro, analyzed the case based on the forensic report. Using a mannequin, they visually demonstrated the locations and forms of wounds that David had.

Hartono also showed pictures of David's corpse. A deep cut at the neck, splintered legs and defense wounds all over his arms and hands all showed that he did not commit suicide. All these facts were never mentioned in the Singaporean court.

Iwan Piliang, a blogger who formed and led the public verification team with other bloggers, said the court process was like a play, where everything had to go according to a script.

"It is about nationalism. A citizen died in another country, with strong evidence it was murder, and then he was condemned to be a suicide."

He added there was a suspicion David's death was related to his research: "Multiview Acquisition from Multi-camera Configuration for Person Adaptive 3D Display".

"His friends said his three-dimensional study could be used for various purposes, either for entertainment or even for military needs."

"And we must not forget that after David's death, there were two unusual deaths at NTU - his professor's assistant *committed suicide' four days later and another researcher was hit by a car 25 days later."

Nurkholis, member of the National Commission of Human Rights, said that the commission would keep monitoring the next court process between June 17 and 25.

"We will also approach international human rights organizations, such as Amnesty International and the Human Rights Watch."

NTU STUDENT'S DEATH FALL
No to Widjaja family's appeal
By Kimberly Spykerman

THE family of the university undergraduate who allegedly stabbed his professor and then fell to his death yesterday asked the Coroner's Court to postpone the second leg of the inquiry into the death.

The father and brother of the late David Hartanto Widjaja cited work commitments as the reason for the request, which was turned down by the court.

The former Nanyang Technological University student's father, Mr Hartono Widjaja, said in a letter to State Coroner Victor Yeo that he was unable to stay for this part of the inquiry because he had to be back at work in Jakarta today. His son William, 24, who is to take the stand next week, also has to work. He was not in court with his parents yesterday.

The Coroner, rejecting their request, said the family had been informed of the inquiry dates in advance. He advised the family to plead with their employers for leave to attend the hearing.

State Counsel Shahla Iqbal added that postponing the inquiry would also inconvenience the witnesses who had already taken time off to testify.

Mr Widjaja told reporters it was unlikely the family would be able to return for the rest of the inquiry. The family's lawyer Shashi Nathan said he would try at least to get William to testify on the family's behalf.

The family had hoped to call nine more witnesses to the stand, all Indonesians who knew the dead young man. Five have been interviewed by the police.

Forensic scientist Lim Chin Chin had another day on the stand yesterday to take questions about the items she examined from the scene - a shirt and singlet belonging to Associate Professor Chan Kap Luk, a broken knife blade and handle, a pair of slippers, two chairs and a folder in Prof Chan's office.

She testified that the blood spatters on Prof Chan's shirt also bore Mr Widjaja's DNA, indicating that the professor and student were near each other. She added that the spatters could also have been cast from a struggle, such as when an arm swings downwards, or from a knife.

She said the rips on Prof Chan's shirt and singlet were likely to have been made by a sharp object, such as a knife. Mr Widjaja's DNA was also found in bloodstains on the other objects. The hearing continues today.

NTU STUDENT'S DEATH FALL
Widjaja: Troubled or 'normal'?
By Kimberly Spykerman

TWO witnesses yesterday offered conflicting testimonies of the state of mind of the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) undergraduate who allegedly attacked his professor and then fell to his death in March.

One said that Mr David Hartanto Widjaja 'looked normal', while the other painted a picture of a troubled young man.

The pair of fellow NTU students who testified were Mr Nolang Fanani and Mr Edwin Lesmana Tjiong, close friends of Mr Widjaja from Indonesia.

They said they were not as close with him on campus here, but still kept in touch largely through online messenger platform MSN.

Mr Fanani, who saw Mr Widjaja only minutes before he allegedly stabbed Associate Professor Chan Kap Luk, said his friend 'looked normal' as he walked about 200m ahead of him towards the School of Electrical & Electronic Engineering. Mr Widjaja appeared unhurried and had his backpack slung casually over his shoulder, he said.

But Mr Tjiong, who goes to the same Queenstown church as Mr Widjaja, said his friend's infrequent attendance - after having been a regular - had raised alarm bells among church members.

Mr Tjiong said he and two other church members went to Mr Widjaja's hostel room the week before his death to offer him 'help and support', but he was not in at the time. He later promised them they could visit the following week.

Mr Tjiong also said that when he asked Mr Widjaja about how his final-year project was coming along, he got the reply that it was 'bad and troublesome'. However, Mr Widjaja said nothing more about the project, Prof Chan, or that his scholarship had been terminated.

Mr Fanani and Mr Tjiong are among the nine people whose names the Widjaja family submitted to the court as witnesses, on top of the current 28.

Forensic scientist Lim Chin Chin, who resumed her testimony on what happened in Prof Chan's office, said it was 'very likely' the student had stabbed the don.

The stupid case is wasting our taxpayer's time and money to conduct this useless and time consuming investigation. They thought SG police like Indon police, can be paid off to cover a murder case. With so many witness and so much evidence against him, not to mention the dumbf**k was standing in the middle of bloody nowhere when he jumped(somemore kena caught on camera). Short of divine intervention or Aliens from outer space, there isn't a way this could have been anything other then a suicide case. I feel sorry for the family but this case is a serious waste of time and money for everyone

Agree completely. Unfortunately there are many conspiracy theorists and government bashers clinging onto this case. :(

A cynical side of me wonders if they are trying to be the next Huang Na's mum. Gullible people are very genrous with donations after all.

Agree. The family is not taking responsibility for neglecting the son's progress during the course of his study. The family had accepted the scholarship but seem to push all responsibility on others.

Interestingly they have not offered anything to back their claims.

Can't say I agree.

This is a case where the alleged attacker suffered much more injuries than the victim, and had more blood bled.

Doesn't have obvious reason presented like the professor being a kungfu expert.

Even if, and its a very big IF here, the professor was some kind of martial arts expert and beat the guy up very badly, at the very most, one can charge him for assaulting the guy not murder. Its a very straight forward case, more then 1 person saw the joker climbing onto a ledge, there was even video evidence of that joker standing there before he jumped down.

The family could not provide any proof that he was murdered other then the fact that none of this so called Indon experts were here to physically examine anything. It seem more likely that they ere probably trying to get his 15min came out and BS about something he read about without actually being physically here to examine anything including the body or interview anyone(which is quite common in other countries where free speech protects pple from BSing or police are easily bribed). And the so called 9 witness from the family sounds very much like some kind of character witness and doesnt even sound like they were in SG at that time.

The so called public verification team is led by a bunch of Bloggers!!! All that sounds totally dubious compared to the fact that
1)None of the witnesses have any reason to lie about the case
2)Even if the witnesses did, what reason would the local forensic scientist have for defending the professor, it doesn't make sense and finally
3)They seem to have conveniently forgotten the fact that the one who got stabbed here was the professor, NOT the joker who jumped down
4)The smoking gun was definitely the video showing that moron just before he jumped

Add that all up and no matter how you see it, the joker doesnt sound like it was murder and even if the professor was Bruce Lee and managed to beat up the guy before he jumped, at most he would be charge for assault not murder.

Independent witnesses actually saw the chap jump ignoring their pleas. The prof was nowhere in sight. He died as a result of the fall. When someone attacks you with knife, are you going to fight and cause him injuries or just let him stab you while you raise your hands.

Supposing the Prof brought the knife and tried to kill David, why in the world would he jump when the Prof was not around.

It matters little if the Prof was bad and David was good.

Can't say I agree.

The moral of the story is to play less computer games and play more outdoor games. This way you don't get pwned by an uncle twice your age in a fight despite have the advantage of suprise and a weapon.

i heard or read from somewhere that there are 2 other death case (within that 2 months) related to this ?

one is the prof's assistant, a china man
another is david's friend

is this true ?

I remember a China man died but it has nothing to do with this. The only reason why they link it up was because the China man worked at NTU. Conspiracy theorist will link everything even remotely related to lend credibility to their story even if it doesn't make sense and no I can't remember any story about his friend

The parents are obviously reluctant to admit that there are problems with their son. they would rather blame others for his death.

I think every dad and mum would do their best to get to the bottom of their kid's death, even if the wiff of fishiness is just a wiff. Any S'porean parent would have done the same, if they suspected something is amiss.

I don't know.. but I think they truly believe the prof is not clean, and don't want him to go scot-free.

It's not hollywood, but I do get a dose of conspiracy theories daily on Indo gossip TVs..

You are stating the obvious. People are posting comments after what independent witnesses have stated in court. I am sure most parents would understand better after hearing the witnesses.
