They say that ghosts and ghouls are released into the world of the living during the Chinese seventh month, also known as the 'Ghost month'.
But what are the chances that things going bump in the night actually make an appearance on your mobile phone?
For a Malaysian family, the image was scary enough to warrant a call to the Singapore Paranormal Investigators (SPI).
According to the citizen journalism website STOMP, Ms Lee and her family was at a cemetery in Negeri Semibilan, Malaysia on October 2, 2006 for a tomb sweeping visit.
During their visit, they used a Nokia phone belonging to Ms Less' brother to snap pictures as they trekked past other tombs after paying respects to their ancestors. The pictures were taken in broad daylight.
When the family downloaded the photos to the computer that night, they noticed one photo which no one remembered taking. No one had any idea how it got into the phone.
The mysterious dark image contrasted the fact that pictures at the cemetery during the day. It also contained scary objects, including a female ghost, Chinese tombs, and a Japanese soldier.
Ms Lee, who works in Singapore, told STOMP that the family came up with two theories as to why the image ended up in their phone - either the spirits were offended that they were talking and laughing too loudly during their day visit, or the spirits were trying to connect with them.
Initial investigations from the SPI concluded that it might have been a phone malfunction or a result of several things that caused the odd image to appear.
That all changed when it seemed even the dearly departed were determined enough to prove the image authentic.
The first prize number for the July 7, 2007 lottery draw was 4941. It happened on the very same day Ms Lee first met with the SPI.
The STOMP report carried an explanation from the SPI with regards to the number:
"Ms Lee told us in the afternoon (before we got to know or think of lottery number), that she was able to see a 4 digit number 1944 from the photo. Naturally we related the number to the year 1944 of WW2, since there was an image of a Japanese solider wearing a cap in the photo.
"We had been discussing whether the photo was revealing a battle scene with people who were killed during the war time.
"Therefore the ghosts showed their faces, and their tombs etc. Little we know that on a special 07/07/07 (triple 7), 1944 was hinted but nobody thought of buying a lottery ticket (4D) in combination!"
A man's face, from a slightly tilted up angle.
A zombie with a big mouth.
Two beheaded human heads put side by side.
An ox head, after the photo has been filtered in embrossed mode.
The edges of the photo now are more clear. They contain some characters that look like Egyptian hieroglyphs.
The photo, when rotated 90 degrees clockwise, shows a woman with shoulder-length hair.
The image of the long-haired woman can also be seen as a portrait of a young girl.
A ghost with long hair covering half its face.
A Japanese soldier wearing a cap.
A woman's face with a subtle smile.
A monster that loooks like Yoda from Star Wars?
Man with a face like a crescent moon, showing off his sharp chin.
A face depicting pain and misery.
The winning lottery number.
