KEDAH, Malaysia - A retired army personnel died together with his wife and two sons in a tragic road accident while another son was left seriously injured.

Shafie Abd Hamid, 57, Che Faridah Ani, 60, and their sons Mohd Itthal Shafie, 26, and Nurul Faiz Shafie, 24, died on the spot near Mukim Tualang.

Muhd Iqbal Zakwan Shafie, 15, suffered serious injuries to his face and right thigh.

He has been sent to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital. At press time, he is still in a critical condition.

It is learnt that a lorry crashed into their white Perodua Viva in Kampung Permatang Limau, Mukim Tualang, at about 3pm yesterday.

Kota Setar Deputy OCPD Supt Rohana Omar said the family was driving from Pendang towards Kebun 500 in Jabi, Pokok Sena.

She said the two-tonne lorry from the opposite direction crossed over into their side of the road, resulting in a head-on collision.

"When the investigating officer arrived at the scene, the four bodies were being carried out of the wreckage. The police were unsure who the driver was," she said.

Supt Rohana said the case was being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act.

It is believed that the lorry driver abandoned the vehicle at the scene. He is still nowhere to be found.

According to a relative, the couple lived in Kampung Kubang Pisang, Pendang, with three of their six children.

Their other children are living in Penang and Alor Setar.

One of them, Mohd Fashah Shafie, said he rushed from Alor Setar to the Sultanah Bahiyah Hospital mortuary after he found out about the accident at 3.30pm.

"We will bury them in the same grave at Tanah Perkuburan Masjid Kampung Pisang as soon as possible," he said, holding back tears at the mortuary.
