Do we have to pay GST for clothes bought in JB?

STOMPer T was told that he had to pay GST for the branded clothes that he had purchased at a Malaysian factory outlet, when he was stopped at the Causeway border checkpoint last month.

The STOMPer was shocked because this thing has never occurred to him before and he wasn't aware of the rules until he was pulled aside.

The checkpoint authorities said that he had to pay GST on the branded clothes that he bought at a factory outlet in JB even though all the clothes he bought was for himself.

"On top of that, they really gave me a tough time when they detained me," he said.

The STOMPer pleaded with them, only to be let off with paying about S$20 for the RM600 worth of clothes which he bought.

"I just wish that if the rule exists, they would make it consistent and ask everyone to pay GST on clothes bought overseas rather than pull aside random people and pull this stunt on them," he said.
