<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->FORMER Singaporean lawyer Gopalan Nair will face only one charge of insulting a High Court judge after the prosecution stood down a second charge yesterday.
Nair, 58, now an American citizen, will defend himself against a charge of insulting Justice Belinda Ang in a posting on his personal blog in May.
The trial will resume in the High Court tomorrow after Nair successfully applied for an adjournment.
At the start of yesterday's hearing, Deputy Public Prosecutor Francis Ng applied for the second charge to be stood down. This means it will not be dealt with now, but could be proceeded on at a later date.
The second charge relates to an e-mail that Nair is said to have sent to Justice Lai Siu Chiu in 2006.
In making the application on the second charge, DPP Ng explained that the two charges were not part of a series of offences or of a similar nature.
Nair yesterday pleaded not guilty to the first charge of insulting Justice Ang.
The offence is under Section 228 of the Penal Code.
If convicted, he could be jailed for up to a year, fined a maximum of $5,000, or both.
In his blog, Nair accused Justice Ang of 'prostituting herself' to Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew and Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong at a court hearing that she presided over.
The three-day hearing in May, which Nair attended, was to assess damages in a defamation suit the two Singapore leaders won against the Singapore Democratic Party (SDP), party chief Chee Soon Juan and his sister Chee Siok Chin.
The second charge on the e-mail he allegedly sent to Justice Lai stemmed from a contempt of court case, also involving the SDP chief. In the e-mail, Nair implied that Justice Lai worked against critics of the People's Action Party, and called her and other Singapore judges 'corrupt'.
Yesterday, Justice Kan Ting Chiu also granted Nair's request for an adjournment to prepare his defence for the trial, which has been set for 10 days. He plans to call seven witnesses, while the prosecution will call five witnesses.
Nair also wanted an adjournment to get more time to arrange for funds from the United States to pay a $3,000 fine for a court conviction against him last Friday. In that case, Nair was found guilty of using abusive words towards police officers and disorderly behaviour at the junction of Bukit Timah Road and Race Course Road on July 4. He is appealing against the conviction.
