Two teen girls have died from injuries sustained after a man threw himself off a high-rise building in southwestern China and landed on them, police said.
According to The Beijing News, one of the girls was a 17-year-old surnamed Zhang and the other was a 15-year-old surnamed Huo.
They were injured when the man, surnamed Li, jumped from a block of flats in Shapingba district, Chongqing, on Tuesday evening, a police statement on the microblogging website Weibo said.
Police said the man was a 31-year-old from Hubei province, and inquiries were continuing.
A spokeswoman for Shapingba district authorities said three people died in hospital despite efforts to save them, The Beijing News reported.
A woman identified only as Zhang’s aunt said the girls were thought to be on their way home from an art class when they were hit, the report said.
The aunt said Zhang’s brother had also died as a child.
“My elder sister’s first child died when he was about 10 years old. Two months after he passed away, my sister was pregnant,” she was quoted as saying. “No one could
have expected that her second child died so young, too.”
Staff at Huo’s school said they were trying to contact her parents, who were working in another city.
