Fake RMIT degree issued by private school in Beach Road

There was a report in the ST about a private school in Beach Road, whose owner issued fake degrees to its students. The students paid $18,000 for the whole course fee.

The funny thing is that RMIT made a police report and the police did not do anything! Like wise, the MOE (Private Schools unit) just gave a short statement saying that the school has not been registered to conduct external degree programmes. But again, no action taken by the MOE.

The MOE and the police are aware of the existence of these fake degrees since last year, and why no action has been taken?

Can some one throw the light why the police have become so inefficient? And of course, the MOE has become so complacent about diploma mills?

All this problem can be solved very easily if the MOE takes the responsibility to start a national accreditation agency with investigative and enforcement powers; which the MOE has repeatedly declined to do so. The police always claim they know what is happenning; like real!:mad:

I am still puzzled why the Police did not throw the owner of the school to jail, because he was the one who actually gave out the fake degrees to the students when they pressed him for their degrees after completing the 18- month course.

And again, I am puzzled why the MOE (Private Schools Unit) did not revoke or close the private school.

And more, why no Minister or MP in Parliament did not querry the Minister of Education or the Minister of State for Education, or the Parlimentary Secretary for Education.

Funny right? Looks like all the PAP Ministers and the Police paid so much but not worth their salt. No one voiced any concern. In Malay, they say "gaji buta" (blind pay).

So what you are trying to say is that the government is also just as guilty because they know about it but did nothing to stop it?

Can some one shed some light why the government or the police or any Minister or MP did not take any action. This has been going on from last year.

there are many private schools in singapore,,,

met one who can offer any kind of accounting course with diploma after 12-18 months..... diploma accredited from a school in China, dunno what province,,,, ask him what his principles in teaching. anything the student requires,,,,,

met another student doing hospitality in an estab school here, she's from Vietnam, and she was doing her industrial attachment and sidelines, she has an allowance of $500 from the restaurant she was working in, (but apparently the restaurant pays 1,000), and the school makan the difference of $500,,,,,

education very lucrative

According to the ST today (See A11), the owner is Mr Benny Yap.

The name of the private school is Brookes Business School, in Beach Road.

The owner claimed that he was duped by a Vietnamese man who sold him the 'franchise' to offer RMIT degrees back in 2007.

So, this thing has been running for more than a year and yet the MOE has done nothing about the school despite compliants from RMIT and students.

Even the police and the Minister of Education is to be blamed too for not taking any action since last year, allowing to private school to continue and more students to be cheated of their money.

Sad case of the MOE, Police and all Ministers and MPs not doing their jobs. This private school should have been closed down and the owner thrown into jail. And of course the Minister of Education and all MOE officials should be sacked for not doing their jobs properly.

This should be a wake up call for the police too.

Agree, this education nonsense has been going on for too long. Kids and parents from 3rd world countries getting ripped off and it is still going on.

this has been happening for ages. too many of them out there. fake degrees, fake courses, fake school even.

MOE dont care cos they would hide behind the excuse that they do not have the power to make arrests.

The police would hide behind the excuse that they do not have the manpower to investigate.

the ministers and MPs hide behind the excuse that they r all too busy making up excuses for their numerous failings.

good joke to start the morning.

another one for the road: ask them to PM me... i will point them in the right direction, starting from those they have collected kopi money from.

The local press is also useless. Sandra Davie can write about foreign paper mills but very quiet about local paper mills. Really feel sad for the foreigners who have come here.

Look at MDIS, with so many imminent people, its also got a chap in its governing council who got a fake doctorate from Preston University and was exposed by the press. The link to MDIS however was never revealed. The guy quickly went to Southern Cross to redeem himself.

One would have to question the values and culture of MDIS and the people associated with it.

By Sandra Davie (Straits Times, 29/08/08, Page A13-14)

AT LEAST 218 people, mostly Singaporeans, are proudly flaunting degrees, MBAs and doctorates from a dozen degree mills, including Preston University, Wisconsin International University, Paramount University of Technology, Kennedy-Western University and Rochville University.

This was uncovered by Straits Times checks on the Internet and trade publications, to find out how widespread the use of bogus qualifications is here.

Most of them are males and predominantly businessmen, professional trainers, private school lecturers and financial consultants.

The majority have basic diplomas and in some cases, degrees from bona fide universities, but quote masters or PhDs from bogus institutions to bolster their credentials.

A few such as Expressions International founder Theresa Chew, who has a honorary doctorate from Kennedy-Western University, and Mr George Quek, who has an honorary business doctorate from the Wisconsin International University, add the words Honoris Causa (Latin for a token of respect or honour) on their namecards, to indicate that it is an honorary degree.

But worryingly, an increasingly long list of private school lecturers and financial consultants openly cite their bought doctorates and masters’ degrees, in their curriculum vitae and client pitches.

A typical example is Be-Mad, a company at Scotts Road, that trains human resource professionals. Its chief executive officer ‘Dr’ David Ong Kah Seng and two of his associates, ‘Dr’ Ng Sin Keh and Mr Yeo Thiang Swee, have degrees from Rochville University, Preston University and Atlantic International University, which are all commonly referred to as diploma mills in the United States.

On its website, Be-Mad consultancy boasts that its long list of clients includes ministries, banks and educational institutions.

Yet another two successful businessmen with questionable qualifications are options trading expert ‘Dr’ Clemen Chiang, a Nanyang Technological University graduate, who runs courses through Freely Business School at North Bridge Road and ‘Dr’ T. Chandroo who runs a chain of 60 Montessori kindergartens here and abroad. Both of them have doctorates from Preston University, classified as a degree mill in the US.

Why do these successful businessmen who have demonstrated expertise in an area resort to using degrees from unaccredited institutions?

After all, resume detectives say such bogus degrees are a ‘ticking time bomb’, which may burnish your CV for now, but sooner or later blow up in your face.

The Straits Times put the question to ‘Drs’ Ong, Chiang and Chandroo.

Mr Ong claimed that his alma mater Rochville University was a reputed one and claimed to have worked on a thesis for 18 months on behavioural sciences.

Mr Chandroo’s secretary said he was ‘too busy’ to answer e-mails or calls from The Straits Times over the past month.

Mr Chiang, known to be an astute entrepreneur who set up Freely Business School and is widely quoted in the local press on options trading, admits that he was ‘not so smart’ when he signed up for an online doctorate programme from Preston University a few years ago.

The NTU engineering graduate said he wanted to complete a PhD in extra quick time and found out about Preston University through the Internet. And because it was listed as a partner of a private school here licensed by the Education Ministry, he thought it was an accredited institution.

He suggested a thesis topic on options trading which was accepted by the university faculty in Wyoming, US. He researched the topic and submitted his thesis within 16 months and was granted a PhD. It cost him all of S$18,000 in fees.

It was only later that he realised that Preston was not accredited in the US.

local papers??? what do u expect them to do??? reporters are faced with imprisonment under the internal security act, u know??? they r a pitiful bunch, having to sell their souls every single day.

the funniest thing is this guy clemen chiang. how can people be so stupid to pay him money to learn option trading??? if he is so good, he would be making so much more as a private fund manager!!! have people not heard of the saying, "if u cant do, teach!!!"???

these embelishings i still can accept... as most people usually indicate that they r honorary in nature. those shameless ones, u cant blame them. not everyone has faith in their own abilities. the private education industry in sg is a big joke!!! even those listed ones... the quality is simply not there.

except for psb academy... damn, i hate to acknowledge this, but credit is due, although they get too much exemptions from u know who. but their partner unis are very reputable, and i have seen quite a number of their grads acquitting themselves well at work.

It is recommended for students or workign personnel who wished to pursue distance learning degree courses conducted at reputable insitutions such as MDIS, SIM or at certain polytechnics. They have great oversea universities conducting the courses at these institutions. The great MOE under the PAP government has recognized them.

Great post about Sandra Davie and how come she can't write about the fake RMIT degree from a local private business school.

Believe me, I am still mad. Its shows the lack of integrity. Disgraceful. Even more disgraceful is the fact that one of receipients of the fake PHD is in the governing council of MDIS, a large education entity with charity status offering tertiary education to a large number of foreigners. She failed to mention that and he is still in the governing council. He goes by the name of T Chandroo.

When caught out, Chandroo managed get a PHD from Southern Cross Uni this year, which happens to run distance learning program with MDIS. Wonder if this comes as a conflict of interest.

SPH will continue to be a brothel with prostitutes who are scared of their pimps.

The MOE and the police are aware of the existence of these fake degrees since last year, and why no action has been taken?

They have been aware for many many years liao....... but lan lan are not allowed to take any action because they will be opening Pandora's box as these fake degrees have been used by thousands of FTs to obtain PRs n citizenship :( .... It oso serves as a bargaining tool to ensure the new PR / Citizen become an obedient pappy dog
