A 59-year-old Chinese national has been sentenced to six weeks in prison after trying to bribe two police officers who caught him begging at Whampoa Drive.
According to the Straits Times, Dai Yongfa had a disfigured nose and ears, and was seen begging near a hawker centre while in Singapore on a social visit pass on July 12.
Two police officers arrived after receiving a complaint about Dai begging.
While the police were waiting for reinforcement, Dai offered Staff Sergeant Nur Hidayat Santoso a stack of cash from his sling bag and said 'gei ni, gei ni' or 'give you, give you' in Mandarin but was turned down.
Dai then turned to Sergeant Muhammad Zaki Zainal and shoved the cash, consisting of $350, 100 Thai baht (S$4) and RMB600 (S$120), towards him while saying the same thing.
Dai persisted when Sgt. Zaki rejected him but kept the money eventually. Two more officers arrived at the scene later and Dai admitted to trying the bribe the two officers with cash so that he would not be arrested.
Another $570 was found on Dai.
He could have been sentenced to five years in prison and/or fined up to $100,000.
