Why it takes 48 hours to deactivate a lost ez-link card

I THANK Mr Ang Eng Hwa ('Lost ez-link card? Deactivation only within 48 hours', Forum Online, last Thursday) for his feedback. Money is stored electronically in the ez-link purse on each individual card to facilitate and allow quick and precise transactions, usually done within one second, which is a requirement to service the needs of the public transport network.
This is unlike that of a credit or debit card, where all transactions are routed to the bank where back-end approval is required before each transaction is made - which would take a considerably longer time for each transaction to be approved.
As a result, when a card is reported lost, a lead time of 48 hours is required for the blacklist to be channelled to all bus, train gate and retail devices to block further transactions on that particular card. At the moment, only cards that are linked to the EZ-Reload by Giro or debit/credit card facility can be blocked as the identity of the owner is known to us. EZ-Link is unable to block any card that is not so linked as these cards are issued and sold anonymously and we are unable to identify the owner.
Alternatively, cardholders may opt to sign up for the EZ-Link CardShield Insurance programme, where 100 per cent of the card's stored value will be protected in case of loss or theft. For more information on EZ-Link CardShield, log on to www.ezlinkcardshield.com.sg.
