Hong Kong media said that while the West is worried that China may control global 5G technology and base station equipment supply, engineers and stakeholders in mainland China are already preparing for the next generation of telecommunications networks.
According to the Hong Kong Asia Times website reported on January 7, Chinese engineers and IT companies are stepping up research and development and financing, aiming at the next big goal after 5G, when the wireless data transmission speed will reach an unprecedented height.
According to the report, universities and technical institutions in mainland China have established partnerships to pool talents and resources in order to develop breakthrough 6G technologies. And all this is still when the 5G commercial network is not online.
Yu Xiaohu, a professor at Nanjing Southeast University, said that by 2030, the sixth generation of wireless system technology will begin to change the daily lives of Chinese Internet and smartphone users, even though some regions of the world may not have fully mature 5G services.
According to the report, since 2015, China's spending on wireless communication infrastructure has exceeded US$24 billion. The Asian giant has built a vast network of 350,000 new mobile phone base stations nationwide. In comparison, there are fewer than 30,000 in the United States.
According to media sources close to the 5G working group of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China is expected to accelerate the 6G concept research and experimentation as early as 2020 in order to develop its own set of definitions and standards.
Currently, the team is studying the potential applications of 6G before investing heavily in new technologies. In essence, experts are evaluating what 5G technology to launch in China starting in 2019 needs to focus on and which applications can be transferred to the 6G timeline.
In addition to expanding coverage, 6G's fluency and ultra-fast transmission speed are unparalleled, more than 10 times that of 5G (5G speed can reach 1Gbit per second). 4K movies can be downloaded in the blink of an eye and will open a new era of interoperability and virtual reality applications driven by rising transmission speeds.
According to mainland media reports, the 6G technology being developed will also provide unprecedented bandwidth to solve the related problems of 5G.
People familiar with the matter believe that it is common for the industry to initiate the development of next-generation communication technologies in advance, as a generation of technology typically takes 10 years to convert from laboratory testing to commercial use.
But some people also believe that the concept of 5G is already blurred. In order to drive future demand, telecom operators and equipment manufacturers will need to be able to promote the technology appeal of 6G, they said. (Compile / Wang Qiang)
