Mr Tony Tan Lay Thiam and his wife, Ms Hazel Poa, both 39, are former government scholarship holders who have become members of the opposition Reform Party. They currently run a chain of tuition centres. -- ST PHOTO: DESMOND WEE

A FORMER officer in the Administrative Service, the top echelon of Singapore's Civil Service, has become a member of the opposition Reform Party.

She is Ms Hazel Poa, 39, who worked for four years in the service in the 1990s. Her last-held post was that of an assistant director in the Finance Ministry.

Possibly the first former Administrative Service officer to have joined the opposition in recent years, Ms Poa became a member of the Reform Party last month, eight months after her husband, Mr Tony Tan Lay Thiam.

The couple, both of whom turn 40 this year, were government scholarship holders who went to Cambridge University in England, where they both obtained first-class honours degrees.

She studied mathematics on a Public Service Commission scholarship, while he studied engineering on a Singapore Armed Forces Merit scholarship.

They now run a chain of 10 tuition centres called SmartLab.

Asst Director is sometimes an entry level position for fresh honours graduates.
Tharman was not a minister in the 1990s.

Hope more young and credible professionals can join Reform Party.
Reform party getting in shape!

Congrates JBJ!

:D :p :D

Under the Management Associate scheme, AO wannabes are assessed over 2 years. If confirmed for entry to the Admin Service, they are given the title of Asst Director. No big deal really...

Power packed siah!! Rp got chance to win!!

it's admirable that top civil servants are beginning to see the light and faith in RP by joining as member. kudos to both of them!!

obviously, kenneth jeyarathnam is doing much positive image selling about RP - the beloved baby of the late true opp hero, JBJ.

i would be joining them soon too. the reasons are plain clear. they are logical and rational thinking people who care for the welfare of other people - the voters.

there is no hidden motive unlike the bloody SDP which is full of all the unanswered question marks. for every of their public antics, one just cannot help but sense some sinister hidden motive. even if u do not see clearly, u can sense their pungent body odour emitting obnoxiously.

why not NSP? this party which makes up of gohmengseng is so illusive. they are like the wind - so difficult to grasp. comes like a breeze, gone like a dream.

NSP's connection with voters is still running a 512kps while RP already speeding ahead with 10 Mbps!

so if u wanna really help people, join the people-focus-people party.

JOIN REFORM PARTY!!

it's a party without hidden motve, or hidden cost that might send u off at loggerheads with the laws and no hidden partylessess or trolls. they are barred from representing RP so no hidden confusion!

RP is focussed and straightforward. they don't go all the way to USA to back slime our own country or instigate other countries' leaders like USA to sanction us.

so what are u waiting for? GO JOIN RP LAH!
