A SALESMAN with beer wholesaler Everlink underdeclared payments from customers and made off with $146,300 within five months to feed his gambling habit. Seow Chee Leong, 30, who blew all of it on 4D and soccer bets, was jailed two years on Wednesday.
He pleaded guilty to committing criminal breach of trust while employed by Everlink Liquor between March and August 2009. A district court heard that as a sales representative, Seow would accept new orders from operators of coffee shops and hawker stalls in the Woodlands, Eunos, Ubi, Changi and Circuit Road areas.
He also collected payments which he was to hand over to the firm located in Senoko Drive the next day. While recording these payments, he would place a piece of cardboard between the original and the carbon copy and later fill up the copy to show a lower amount.
By such means, he misappropriated $146,300 from 24 customers. On Aug 31, 2009, he surrendered himself at a police post in Yishun North.
Defence counsel Zaminder Singh Gill then explained that Seow's parents had tried to pay Everlink but were only able to raise $5,000 by selling their four-room flat and downgrading to a smaller flat.
Seow and his Chinese national wife lived with his parents. She has returned to China. They have no children.
