<!-- story content : start --> A NAVY staff sergeant, who smoked contraband cigarettes, was asked by two men to help them smuggle in more tobacco. Instead of reporting them, Gavin Bertram Lazaroo, 30, assured them safe passage for the contraband being sneaked into the country by sea. For his role, he received 170,000 packets of cigarettes. On Monday, he was jailed a year and nine months for corruption by a district court. Lazaroo, who left the Republic of Singapore Navy in November 2007, pleaded guilty to accepting bribes six times between April 2006 and March 2007. He was also ordered to pay a penalty of $12,600 - which was the value of the contraband cigarettes he had received. The maximum penalty for corruption is a $100,000 fine and a five-year jail term.
