Ex-MOM inspector charged

A FORMER housing enforcement inspector was charged on Friday with getting bribes of $3,000 from a man to influence investigation against him for offences. M. Jayabalan, 42, formerly with the Ministry of Manpower, allegedly obtained a $2,000 bribe from Mr Khairul Shah A. Abrahim at Block 146 Potong Pasir Avenue 1 to influence the investigation against him for illegal deployment of foreign workers. He is also accused of similarly getting another $1,000 from Mr Khairul, owner of Pravin Engineering and Transport Services, at Block 235 Selegie Road the next day. The alleged payments were made through a third party. A pre-trial conference has been set for Monday. If convicted, he faces a fine of up to $100,000 and/or a jail term which may extend to five years.
