Ex-headhunter jailed 27 months for cheating
By Khushwant Singh
A RECRUITMENT agent submitted false confirmation agreements to employment firm Solutino Career and five 'applicants' to pocket nearly $9,900. When charged in court in the middle of last year, Wong Kan Siong absconded and went on to cheat three more victims of a total of $78,000 in investment scams.
On Tuesday, the 37-year-old pleaded guilty and was jailed for two years and three months. A district court heard that on March 20 last year, Wong submitted a document purportedly confirming that Solutino was to be paid $8,788 for getting a project manager for Shin Nippon Air Technologies.
This entitled Wong to a commission of $1,757. There was never an agreement and till May 7 this year, he pulled this trick three more times. He also collected money from five people to whom he had promised jobs.
In May, his firm went to the police but Wong did not stick around. While on the run, he cheated businessman Lim Chong Lee, 41, of $21,505. This was supposedly for a business venture to buy car radios for $185 each for sale to Goldbell Company at $500 each. He also cheated Mr Lim of a further $56,500 in two other scams.
