SINGAPORE: A former employee of a luxury watch retailer Cortina was on Wednesday jailed three months for criminal breach of trust amounting to about S$15,000.

26-year-old Neo Ghim Fong admitted to misappropriating the cash between December 2012 and May 2013 from the retailer's Raffles City branch.

The former sales administrative coordinator would take cash of amounts ranging from S$100 to S$500, once or twice weekly from Cortina's safe.

The court heard that she used the money to pay for household expenses and medical bills.

When she received her pay, Neo would try to return S$200 to S$300 monthly to Cortina but the amount returned was not enough to cover the shortfall.

In mitigation, Neo said in Mandarin that she has two children to take care of.

She also asked for home detention as her father-in-law is wheelchair-bound and requires care.

But the district judge noted that Neo had planned to commit the offence over a period of time, so a short custodial term was warranted.

The maximum penalty for criminal breach of trust is a jail term of seven years and a fine. - CNA/xq
