A 39-year-old woman is fighting for her life in hospital after she was stabbed in her bed in her Yau Ma Tei flat on Wednesday morning.

Officers arrested her former boyfriend, who is 16 years her junior, at the scene.

Police said the man was unarmed and in an agitated state outside the flat and near to the victim when officers arrived.

“He continued to murmur to himself while he was being arrested,” a police spokeswoman said.

The 23-year-old was uninjured, but was taken to nearby Kwong Wah Hospital so doctors there could assess his mental state.

Based on their initial investigation, police believe that the woman was attacked at about 11.30am in her bed in the second-floor flat in the Man Ying Building on Man Ying Street.

It is understood the ex-boyfriend had a key to the flat which he used to enter.

The victim managed to get up from her bed during the attack and run out of the flat, according to police.

One neighbour, who heard the woman’s shouts, found her sitting in the second-floor lift lobby and could see she was seriously injured. The victim had reportedly left a trail of blood behind her in the lobby.

The neighbour then alerted a 79-year-old security guard who called the police.

Officers arrested the man in the lift lobby, which has been cordoned off. Police refused to confirm if they have identified the weapon used in the attack.

The victim sustained injuries to the left arm and shoulder and was in a “semi-conscious” state while being carried to the ambulance, according to the spokeswoman.

She was in a critical condition in Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Yau Ma Tei this afternoon.

Police handled 1,457 reports of woundings last year, a 12 per cent drop from 1,659 in 2012. There were 1,777 reports of such incidents in 2011.
