'Schindler' of China premieres at Berlin fest

BERLIN (AFP) — The remarkable true story of a German who helped save the lives of more than 200,000 Chinese during the Japanese invasion of Nanking during World War II came to the Berlin Film Festival this week.

"John Rabe" profiles a man who has been compared to Oskar Schindler, the German businessman and member of the Nazi party who risked his life to save hundreds of Jews from the Holocaust.

Rabe was an executive in China and card-carrying Nazi who had been living in Nanking, then the Chinese capital, as the head of the Siemens subsidiary there.

The Japanese siege of the city begins in 1937 as Rabe was to return to Berlin. But during the farewell ball in his honour, an air raid sparks a panic and he opens the company gates to offer refuge to his staff and their families.

As the bombardment persists unabated, Rabe orders an employee to locate the giant Nazi swastika flag on the grounds of the Siemens offices.

It is quickly spread out like a canopy and dozens of Chinese seek shelter beneath it. The Japanese pilots fly off, recognising that as members of the Axis the Germans should be spared -- ending what would have been a bloodbath.

It is a remarkable scene that director Florian Gallenberger told AFP was true to life.

"The aspect of a Nazi as a hero was one of the things we gave the most thought to when we made the movie," Gallenberger said after the film was warmly applauded here at its premiere.

"I didn't want to show him in a way that wasn't accurate. After living in China for 30 years, he had a naive, romantic image of National Socialism (the Nazi cause) as an humanistic worker's movement.

"I would prefer this to be seen as a film about a human being who displayed civic courage against all odds rather a film about a Nazi. But that was an aspect of his character and it would be wrong to try to cover that up."

Moved by the Chinese plight, Rabe opts to stay in Nanking and, together with members of the expatriate community, wins the approval of the Japanese occupying forces to create a safety zone for civilians run by the Westerners.

Japanese soldiers mount repeated raids in the city, staging mass executions and raping tens of thousands of local women. But up to 250,000 Chinese eventually survive the seven-week onslaught by staying in the safety zone.

Gallenberger said he had never heard of Rabe when his producer approached him with the idea of doing a biopic.

To prepare for the film, Gallenberger travelled to China to speak with survivors of the rape of Nanking, as the genocidal campaign is known, which ultimately claimed the lives of up to 300,000 Chinese civilians.

He said the Chinese authorities were reluctant to allow him to make the movie as the country had little interest in seeing itself as a victim of the Japanese. But they eventually granted him permission.

Ulrich Tukur, who appeared in the German Oscar-winning film "The Lives of Others" leads a cast that also includes US actor Steve Buscemi, French actress Anne Consigny ("The Diving Bell and the Butterfly") and Germany's Daniel Bruehl ("Goodbye Lenin").

Though a hero in China, Rabe was until now little known in his native Germany and died impoverished and forgotten in Berlin in 1950.

The film-makers take Japan to task for seeking to wipe the horrors of Nanking from the historical record.

"It would great if the film could help start a debate in Japan about this subject because it is not being confronted there," Gallenberger said, adding that he hoped the involvement of the well-known actor Teruyuki Kagawa would ensure broad distribution in Japan.

Gallenberg said that only the passage of time has allowed Germany to look at its own heroes from that shameful era in the country's history.

"The thing about Rabe is that his story is surprising and paradoxical. This confusing image for example of the Nazi flag as a symbol of salvation -- which in this instance is historically accurate -- is perhaps only possible now at a historical distance," he said.

"John Rabe" is screening in the Berlinale Special section of the festival, which wraps up Sunday.

The chinese communist govt has no desire to talk about Nanking invasion nor take Japan to task for the 11 long years sino-japanese war 1931-1945 because this would open lots of old wounds and embarrassments as the CCP did not do anything in WWII and it was the Chinese Nationalist Party who did the majority fighting.

23 major battles happened in China after 1937 when CCP and KMT joined forces. KMT fought 21 of those battles and CCP 2.

Right now, their WWII leader Generalissimo Chiang is still unburied, unable to rest in peace and can't return home to Zhejiang.

But I thought Chiang said that Jap was only a disease of the skin, and he was captured by ?? and forced to join the communists to fight the Jap.

Evil Triumped when the Good do nothing!

That is what happened in Singapore.

Sinkies got no balls to vote out LKY and his stinking bunch of self serving PAP bastards

200 and more billions got sucked out of Singaporeans to finance LKY takeover of Singapore and fund his bunch of running dogs and toads

To continue taking even more money of whatever is left in Singapore

I SPIT ON THAT BASTARD OLD MAN LKY

maybe sometime it better to close one eye. ignorance is bliss.

Pretending will not solve the problem. At least get out of sinkieland, you are still consider doing something.

It was "young" marshal Zhang Xueliang put Chiang under house arrest, to force chiang into a joint front between the KMT and CCP.

During the Sino-Jap conflict, KMT had more troops and better equip than the CCP and also fighting died down after 1942, only localised fighting occured, even then most of the fighting was done by warlords allied to Chiang's KMT while Chiang retain KMT main forces to be use again the CCP.

During the 1944 Japanese Army offensive which objectives was to capture US airbases to prevent bombing raids of B29s to japanese home islands and also knock KMT of the war. Even then Chiang kept his best troops behind and left the fighting to those warlords. Despite the best efforts from the flying tigers, the troops under those warlords command melt away from the japanses onslaught.

By 1944, japanese imperial airforce no longer control the skies as the flying tigers knock them off and in term of personal equipment, infrantrymen of both sides carry the single shot rifle, maybe japs had more light MGs and heavy MGs under their TOE. while jap artillery were more impressive than the KMT, but it was puny compare to US Army. Dont get me started on jap armour, first they were of small quantity and were light tanks, which can be knock out by the Browning 50cal MG which the KMT was equiped.

So with the above conditions and had more men in the fields than the japanese army, how can the so call KMT forces fall back under the japanses offensive resulting in great loss of central and southern china. Think with your knee also know that Chiang believe Japanses will lose the war, he can let the jap had all the lands as he know he can get all back once jap lose. By keeping his losses to a mininium, he will can quickly use these forces against the CCP once the sino-jap conflict ended.

Dont forget, Chiang had been a student in japan and japanese are against the leftist. There had been instances of surrendered japanese army troops prevent CCP forces from entering towns and cities till the KMT troops arrive.

I agree with most of sleaguepunter above points but

I never say that the chinese nationalist party and allies fought a brilliant war against the Japanese. The point is why are the chinese communist govt so reluctant to talk about Nanking invasion nor take Japan to task for the 11 long years sino-japanese war 1931-1945. simply because they did too little in those war years and are too embarrassed to talk about it .
Back then, KMT as the ruling govt of mainland and Chiang the leader of a loose coalition forces of KMT and regional warlords did defended mainland from the Japanese Invaders ( they did 90% of all fightings in China )

After Japan surrendered. Chiang, Japan and USA quickly came to an agreement that Japanese troops should hold their grounds in the cities and towns until KMT troops arrived to take over. Japanese soldiers are not allowed to surrender to CCP armies.

when WWII ended. Rep China territory was bigger than People Republic territory today. Why Mao Zedong didn't claim back Outer Mongolia ( 40 times the size of Taiwan ) when ROC in 1950 had already nullified the 1945 treaty with Russians that give Mongolia the independence referendum. Yalta treaty ( 1945 ) was the basis of the 1945 ROC treaty with Russians, then the ROC treaty became nullified automatically when the US nullified the secret treaty with Russians in 1950.

an interesting fact. territory size
Qing China is the biggest of all Chinese empires. Rep China ( 1945 ) is the second biggest. People Rep is the third biggest which is much bigger than Ming China ( probably the 4nd biggest )

it truth CCP had nothing to boast about during the war. First must consider that the losses sustained during the Long March where the CCP lost 90% of it combat strength. But the main reason of why CCP not taking the japanese to task over the Rape of Nanking and other crimes against humanity during the conflict is not because CCP lack of war exploits.

It more due to the soft loans Japan Govt gave to PRC after the thawing of relationships between the two nations. Do you scold your neighbour when he/she is lending money to u without interest? I believe u also dont right. japan another crazy nation, give apologies also must set conditions. So PRC took japan money, so cannot cow beh cow buh on those crimes happen during the war.

Only when there a disagreement over other matters, PRC controlled media will use the war records to stroke up public sentiments.

By and large, Chinese as a whole are a forgiving lot as long got money to make, chinese dont care what the other party had done to them before. Just look at China history, so many times were conqured by foreign tribes who kill wantonly, only to end up living together side by side after 2-3 generations. just look at the North East, many are descentents of the 1million Japanese immirgants who settled there after the proclaimation of Munchukuo by Puyi. While most left for Japan after the war, many remain and settle there a citizens of PRC.

Yes, if we ignore all these, life is a lot happier. Been a long time reader at
delphiforums, up till 2006 elections. After that, basically loss hope and realize
most Singaporeans do not want any change.

Remembered I was cycling thru a park at East coast build by PAP and all the
people so happy after the elections. Everyone has PAP written on their foreheads.
Realized that all these people will never want the freedom of thought that comes
as we approach first world status.

Maybe its the indoctrination from young. How many Singaporeans will tell their
children that what they learned in school during their moral education and
social studies is nothing but sublime thoughts to brainwash them.

I agree with Tonychat, pretending will not solve the problem. Getting out or
preparing your offsprings to get out is the best under such circumstances.

Change will only come if people want it. Much as I want to be proven wrong,
I know i will be disappointed like the last election. These voters are not going
to laugh at me, I will laugh at them.

thought the TS post was about Japanese invasion of Nanking
I think I was slightly off the topic with my posts but there are peoples here talking about Singapore, PAP and LKY.

OFF topic already!! :D

Actually saw the documentary of Rabe last yr on History Channel. Given the choice, i rather not watch the movie as movie always distort the true story in the quest to make it more dramatic.

For those who remain, here's the famous poem by Martin Niemöller

When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.
When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.

When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.

When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
I was not a Jew.

When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.

"When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out."
--------------------------------------------

For those that remain here, they never wanted anyone to
speak out. They are just happy being silent. In fact, they
will think anyone speaking to the PM in loud tones is
being disrespectful, like they have been thought in school.

This poem is appropriate to those within the 66% who see the rot but don't speak out becos of their complacency that they have a "secure" livelihood. When they feel the direct impact of their inaction, they realise they no longer have a voice to speak out.

Being screwed and screwed by LKY and all his stinking bastards in white.

thrown away by LKY or given to his doggies to spend on french cooking lessons

SINKIES GOT WHAT THEY FUCKING DESERVED

NOT MORE
